Time to do the wine budget!!
Time to do the wine budget!!
So every year my wife and I go about doing our tax and usually get a nice little return!
And every year we do the same thing.. 20% to me to do as I please, 20% to her for the same, 20% for a holiday, 40% on the house!
My share will obviously go towards wine throughout the year!!! So the question for me is - what is being released this year that 'may' be unmissable
I will use an example... 2012 Rockford Basket Press Shiraz will be a must have in my mind.....
Also the 2012 St. Henri should prove enticing!!!
Having poured petrol everywhere Im looking forward to the replies and banter!!!

Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
What I'm saving my limited pennies for this year:
Any/all of the Marius '13 releases.
Ten Minutes by Tractor '13 Estate Pinot and possibly Chardonnay.
Wynns '13 Black Label Cab, possibly some of the more expensive stuff if the reviews are sufficiently positive.
Pennies '12 St Henri if the chains go on a full on price war.
Any/all of the '13 Wendouree releases if my family friend and long time Tony Brady signed order form recipient is keen on some too.
The ones I'm after the most are the Marius, Wynns BL and Ten Minutes Pinot. Not a Stonewaller so BP is not on my radar - unless someone wants to lend a brotha a hand!

Yes, looking forward to 2013 Marius releases also!
Spoken with Roger, who says he's very happy with the wines, which is a glowing endorsement, given Roger's usually very understated and modest views of his own wines.

Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
I like how everyone thinks there is a 'wine budget'
Dont know about you, but I have never been able to be 'within budget' for at least 3 years.......which just so
happens to coincide with when i started to rebuild my cellar/stocks:-D

Budget, what budget!
All of the 2013 Wendouree's
As many of the 2012 Rockford BP that Lindi allows me
All of Roger's 2013 Marius'
Some more Cradle of Hills, particularly the 2012 Cab Shiraz that's hasn't been released yet
Some 2013 Coonawarra Cabs - Wynns Black Label/Majella or Katnook. Definitely some Wynn's John Riddock if Last Choice flog it off at $73 again
Ditto the 2011 Moss Wood for $45.50 (thank you BWS)
Some Margaret River Cabernets
Some Margaret River Chardonnay's
I forgot about Noon's as well

I hope to get a couple of dozen of each of those as well.
Taittinger Comtes 2006 is out, and while not as good as the 2002 and 2004, is on my 'to buy' list. Additionally, there are a number of 2008 grower champagnes due to be released soon - especially from the Cote de Blanc. This will be an expensive six months

Whats the estimated wait on the Marius waiting list? had my first bottle of Sympatico not all that long ago, and very keen to buy more. Loved it.

Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
budget? No such thing!
I'm pretty random. I'll have a few weeks where wine goes off the list then I'll hit a region
with the boss and things get out of hand.
I'm still on the Wendouree band wagon and love their wines so I'll be getting on board when the mailer arrives
in a few weeks. Seems like the 2012 rockford BP is firmly in everyone's sights. I'll have a taste first but
can see myself grabbing some of that.
Last few years I've been doing a Clare Valley trip in September and going to the Grosset CD.
That can be a costly exercise if there's a few back vintages on offer.
I've got a Mac Vale visit in 2 weeks for a mates 'tasting' bday so anything could happen there.
Also probably go back to Noons after my first CD visit last year. Was a bit of a madhouse but worth effort
considering price/quality etc etc.
The list goes on....

Took me 10 months. I put my name down in August 2014 and I received an email from Roger last week stating that I'm now on the mailing list.

Rockford
Gomersal
Ballycroft
Marius
Noon
Wendouree
Wild Duck Creek
Head
Greenock Creek
Eperosa
My must buys every year (depending on finances for quantities of course). I am being more picky with what and how much I buy now. I try and stick to just a dozen from each winery but of course that doesn't always work! There is just so much good wine out there and sometimes you have to be picky, depending on your budget and storage space of course.
Cheers

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

I emailed Roger in early August last year about being on the mailing list, prior to the stellar reviews on Wine Front and elsewhere for the 2012s, but no email for me. So I'm a little mystified as to how long it takes to get on his list.
I started buying his wine in 2010 and I bought some 2012s from Gavin. Hopefully I can also get some 2013s from him as well.

Make sure you add him to the safe sender list. A few people have been disappointed in years gone by when they missed out due to their email spam filter.
never underestimate the predictability of stupidity

Hmm, I haven't received mine yet, not in spam either.

The fact Robert was speaking so highly of it - even when the excellent 2010 was for sale - makes it a no brainer for me.
Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
anyone know where I can find some 2010 basket press ?

I'd love to pick some up to but as a non-stonewaller from QLD, I can't see that happening. It'll be gone by the time we might get a chance to head down that way next year . But I'm looking forward to trying their 2013 Rifle Range.

Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
In regards to the Marius wines. I have a few 2012 Symphony and Simpatico.
Would these wines drink well now, or are they a wine that needs significant time in the cellar.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

You can drink them anytime you want/like. if you like your reds young, drink them now or if you like them aged, Marius wines will age well for 8-10 years even more on a better vintage or if you like to experience the development of them, drink them with a couple of years in between. I used to have 2 cases of 2002 Shiraz (that's all Roger had back then, it was his second vintage and first commercial vintage, 2001 was not released to the markets, no fancy names like Symphony, Simpatico,.. and a simple but elegant label that looked like came out of 90 dollar bubble jet printer, still remember very vividly sitting in his front yard looking over his vines and sipping 2001 and 2002 Shirazm back in 2005) and I drank them from 2005-2015, it's been an incredible journey. Only problem is that I ran out of them now and they would still easily go another 8-10 years in a good cellar.
Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
Hi Nick,
I'd certainly be giving the 2012 Symphony at least a 4-5 year rest. The Simpatico is approachable now, but needs alot of air.
Both will have 2020 covered easily.
Amazing depth in Roger's wines.

Re: Time to do the wine budget!!
I've only ever had one 10yo Marius and it was astounding. Enough that I just pack them straight into storage for a long sleep as soon as I get each allocation
