Re: June 2015 Purchases
x6 2012 Linderman's Limestone Ridge purchased at the TWE Cellardoor Sydney Tasting Event last night at the SCG. Nice venue for a wine tasting! This wine and the 2012 Seppelt St.Peters stood out to me for real bang for your buck. The 2010 Penfold's Grange was still wound pretty tight and wasn't giving too much away as expected but it had class written all over it. However for $600 per bottle ... pass.
Cheers

Didn't want to put it down until they arrived as I had an uncharacteristically superstitious moment...

3 x 2014 Tyrrell's Johnno's Shiraz
5 x 2014 Tyrrell's Old Patch
6 x 2014 Tyrrell's 4 Acres
This will be my only purchase for June (keep repeating to myself...).

It's been creeping up for a while but I reckon I'm about a dozen bottles away from crossing the line from De Bortoli fan to De Bortoli tragic. Steve Webber, and his team, just seem to have a knack or producing really good, elegant wines that cellar well at a very competitive price.
I'm not quite at the tragic level, but I agree on the quality De Bortoli has been producing lately. I had the 2013 (I think) Estate Pinot Noir a few weeks back and it had class and complexity well beyond the $22 or so I paid. I've found a couple of the chardonnays to be a little lean for me though still classy.

I haven't had the 2013 Estate Pinot, but I have half a dozen bottles so I'm glad to hear your high praise. The 2014 also sounds pretty superb and is but a fortnight away from being added to the cellar.

My descriptors aren't very good but I had this a couple of weeks back: From the What are you drinking now thread:
deejay81 wrote:Drank with a Mrs Macs microwave beef pie...
2012 Metala White Label Shiraz Cab - Bottle No 160149
How many bottles of this stuff did they make???? Anyway, Didn't really pair well with the pie but it didn't not pair with it either, I was just hungry and Lauren and I both wanted a drink.
Decanted and poured. Dark purple with a little bit of red. Initially lots of raisins and blackcurrents from the decanter, then in the glass, more black fruit bit of eucalyptus and menthol.
Upon tasting, more black fruits, a bit of leather, and some fine tannins, couldn't really notice too much oak either.
For how much I paid for this ($13 in a six pack or so possibly less), this is great stuff with or without meat pies!

Yes Jamie, its a bit of a fruit bomb, but a beautiful fruit bomb! Beautiful fruits, rich, plush with a good balance of oak, power of shiraz with the calming temperance of cabernet...Best VFM wine in the country.
Wolfies right hand man John Glatzer knew exactly what he was on about when he knew 40 years ago that LC provided some outstanding depth to the Barossa marques that wowed the show circut for just as long.
I believe In my humblest of humble opinons that LC is the most under rated unheralded region bar none in Australia.
I have a few Metalas in the the cellar from the 80s, a few from the 90s and stacks from the noughties...they will cellar for decades and a thread that Mahmoud and myself had a bit of fun back last year or so, where can you have a wine that cost you 20 cents a vintage.
On another well worn point:
I know you will tell me to let go again and yes understand how we can be in absolute raptures about a particular Aussie red(s), yours is HoG/Mt Ed mine is John Riddoch, but in Graeme's current thread, the statement alluding to MT Ed not possibly staying at 1/7 the price of HoG with respect leaves me scatching my head.
I get bloody annoyed at wine writers, particulary one in Australia who is not on the gravy train but driving it, making constant suggestions that wine X should be 5 times the price.
We as passionate consumers need to remain impartial about such things, I try my best, but cry in my beer about the prices of many wines that overnight scaled the heights that I can not ever consider buying again.
I don't doubt that Mt Ed is outstanding...that's not the point, what I do doubt that if something is already so good ( and yes got 3 bottles of the 2012 myself and will probably be the most expensive wine that I buy this year at $135 pb), how can it then be better than so good, year after year after year??
Soon we will be in St Henriville 100 points...102 points.
I don't get, much less buy the argument, (pardon the pun) that wines need to go up crazily in price...just based on speculation...100 point reviews or some Johhny come lately international wine scibe/buyer saying this is the next 3 Rivers.
Oh Moira, sorry for the advertisement...just purchased another case for my trouble.
Cheers
Craig
Tomorrow will be a good day

Look out for the Cab Franc Merlot if you can find it. Much less produced in 2013 apparently. But well worth it.

I am visiting in early July so will ask about it but i am sure it won't be going for the $16 / bottle I paid for the Cab Merlot. From memory, like their Pinot, the Cab Franc is in small quantities.

That is an amazing price, the winery sells it for around $23 or so. You did well!

hahaha, lucky you didn't buy in Hong Kong, here it is double kaching on the credit card, despite the tax-free environment. Rousseau is one of maybe 10 or so producers people here buy irrespective of the price, in fact, I am told they usually don't even bother asking what price is!!!!
Virtually all of these wines are Burgundy, although HK and the Mainland seem to have also become the home of the absurd Liber Pater

But you will never regret it.
I assume you are buying direct if its 2013 vintage and you have some sort of introduction or long term relationship to them and you just can't walk in off the street like an Australian cellar door?
Btw, out of interest what price do they charge direct? I have drunk young Rousseau Chambertin or Clos de Beze a number of times off restaurant winelists in France and the current going rate at the right venue is about 500-550 euros a bottle, which sure beats buying it in Australia or HK. You just have to make the sacrifice of drinking a great wine young rather than waiting until its peak but my dining group wasn't complaining about vinous infanticide when we sampled a 2010 Clos de Beze in Beaune last year

That is about the retail release price in Australia. If you are lucky enough to be on a buyers list.
