Its Winter - Brisbane Offline - July

Post by gpk »

It’s Winter and a good excuse to look at some red’s. Anyone up for an offline on the either the weekends of the 3/4th July or 10/11th Jul.

Theme: Keep it simple “Bring What You Like” or Revisit the Langton’s List………….what else??

Venues: Not sure what is about, but perhaps it’s time to try 85 Miskin (formally Brents) or revisit Deer Duck, Two Small Rooms. Anything other venues been discovered of late.

Cheers Gerry

Pencil me in Gerry. Either of the two Saturdays (4th or 11th) are looking good.
Put me down for a 2001 Creek block (lets see if Parker was right in giving it 100 points) and perhaps something else if Kell comes.

Saturday the 4th or possibly the 11th works for me. If I can get a baby sitter, Janine will come as well. I'm easy on the venue too.

I have a bit of a treat for the Brisbane crew. Joe form Ballycroft has kindly given me bottles of all of 2012 releases for us to try. They are released in August and they are exceptional. That's 5 bottles in all and well worth trying.

I'll bring something from my cellar as well. Not sure what yet, maybe an 02 or 04 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache.

Rens, that's very genourous and it's a wine I've always wanted to try.

Cheers
Ian

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?

I am an absolute novice and would more than likely add nothing to the night but I'd love the chance to get a little more familiar with good red wine. I'm around on the 10/11th of July. My wife would be available too if that's appropriate.

It's almost definite I will be in Brisbane for business on Friday 24th, so would be delighted to catch up that night.

Just a further preference - if the 24th does end up being the date, could I put in a vote for 85 Miskin St? I was fond of the former Brents, and Brent is still the owner there.

I'm out for this one on the 24th (realistically for all 3 dates as it turns out).

Hope you have a good one, hopefully catch the next one down the track.

85 Miskin Street is good for me.
On the wine side of things I can bring a 2013 Yellowtail shiraz. If that works?

Seriously though - a theme of some kind would be great to know as far in advance as possible for those (me) that will have to source something decent.

It looks like the 24th July is going to be the date. Ian thinks he should be ok as well so at this stage we have:

Michael + ??
Rens & Kelly? Greenock Creek – 2001 Creek Block
Luke
Waiters Friend
Simon (bigtinnie) + 1
Ian + ??? 02 or 04 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache plus Ballycroft 2012 release tasting (compliments Joe)
Gerry & Nicole

Venue: 85 Miskin Street (will go ahead and book today)

Theme: Bring What You Like….something special from the cellar

Cheers Gerry

Make me + 2 as Janine and Perry are keen. I'm thinking maybe a Xanadu Reserve or Stevens Road and a EJ Carr Sparkling. Not sure what Pez will bring......

Happy to wait and see how numbers pan out before inviting someone along. I reckon we are bumping up against the 12 mark and much bigger becomes difficult to manage.

Janine will be coming as we have managed to secure a sitter. So I'm a +1.

I will get tasting notes and plenty of info about the Ballycroft wines too. They are all very good.

Cheers

My flights are now booked. I'm a definite. And definitely looking forward to it. Back to Perth the following day, however - a shame.

The night is coming together :D :D :D . Numbers and wines so far.

Michael
Rens & Kelly?: Greenock Creek – 2001 Creek Block
Luke & Janine: Xanadu Reserve or Stevens Road and a EJ Carr Sparkling
Perry
Waiters Friend
Simon (bigtinnie) + 1
Ian + Janine: 02 or 04 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache plus Ballycroft 2012 release tasting (compliments Joe)
Gerry & Nicole: 08 Giaconda Pinot Noir and 04 Kaesler Old Bastard

Venue: 85 Miskin Street – booked.

Brent has asked us to go with a set menu or offered to design a menu to match wines. So more decision’s for the group????? Let me know the preference. Corkage is $15.00 a bottle.

I'll firm up my +1 early next week.
As far as the menu goes, every time we've had the set menu it has been top notch.
That said, if Brent is going to design a menu around the wines we'll have to work out some flights (of wines), prior to going. Only drawback I can see if there is some one who 'does not eat' a certain type of food (allergy, religion, dislikes)
Happy with either...

G'day

My plane tickets are now booked. In terms of the menu, is it a set menu with choices? That might get around any allergy issues (I don't eat seafood, for example).

Alternatively, a designed menu means we should probably theme for certain wine styles (e.g. a white and a red wine style) rather than anything goes. That removes some element of variety in the wines, but provides better food matches.

Cheers

I think we could work with them on a set menu and hopefully work around any food allergies. Hopefully they can make a substitution for the individual or change the course if a it doesn't work for a few. Their digustation looks like a good starting point and match up to red wine theme night. http://media.wix.com/ugd/8c092e_274dec6 ... 292a06.pdf . What do we all think??

I think we can probably group the wines up into flights to match up. If the numbers stay at 13 I have a couple of magnums to choose from that may be a better choice and give us a bit more of a taste with the main courses.

cheers Gerry

Hi
As far as food goes I'm good for anything. Someone may have to point me in the right direction for a wine though.
Looking forward to it.

I'm a novice so nothing too flash in my cellar. I like big reds - a particular thing for shiraz/cab blends.
I'm not a white drinker generally but I'm open to bringing one along but will need guidance as I don't have a clue on white wine. Hunter Valley Semillon is reportedly good?

No need for it to be flash.
And yes, Hunter Sem is very nice.

But before we go there, Shiraz/Cab blend or the other way around would be mighty easy. Pennies Bin 389 you can get anywhere. For your +1, have a look through the Langtons classification almost all are good wines and would fit well and most you can pick up easily. Most including the bin 389 can be picked up retail with a bit of age on them, so you will not need to resort to the lottery of Auctions. Most in the classification have abundant tasting notes online so if you want to do a bit of research to find something that fits with your style it it pretty easy.

Just searched your posts Bigtinnie. The Yalumba Signature that you have would fit in well with the lot that are coming. They can also be got with a bit of age on them.

I concur - the degustation looks superb - may find other offerings to match if we decide to go this way and they allow it.
I remember I promised Ian to bring along an old Kinzbrunner chardy (Toolangi Reserve 2002) and I might find something older in the red dept....
