Just swinging by to say that I thoroughly support the nature of this forum. Many friends met and fine wines consumed as a result of participating.
Bartenders are supposed to have people skills. Or was it people are supposed to have bartending skills?

Ditto that, old chap.

I would buy more from Gavin if the prices were more competitive and the products offered were closer to whats newly available, and the "flavour of the month". By that I mean the latest new wine that might have been reviewed somewhere recently, and got a glowing report card. There are deals everywhere, and prices are very sharp. There is a lot of competition out there.

I completely agree with your comments. Have been a long time member and although i contribute far less these days than previously i am hoping to soon turn that around. My wine world would be lost without this boards existence. Many friends made past and present and i hope to continue to do so. Much knowledge also gained. Common courtesy (in the form of an email or PM to Gavin) should prevail if you ever intend to post something that you feel may be of conflict to Gavin providing this forum and his business attached to it.

Discounts for forum members? :P

I recently bought my first couple of cases from Gavin, and will continue to buy more from here because I particularly like wine shops that choose their stock carefully. All my offline wine purchases are made from smaller retailers who select more interesting wines to sell, and I want to endeavor to do the same with my online purchasing. It might cost a few bucks more, but wine is a luxury, and choosing and buying the wine is, I think, a particularly enjoyable part of that luxury. But that is just my opinion.

To be honest Gavin I think it would be even more beneficial to your wine sales if you ran a higher visual profile on the forum index page.
The top left icon completely gets lost IMO. I am a daily reader/ user of your great forum but don't really even think about buying wine for some reason.
I think it would be good actually to see some smart advertising windows of a selection of your wines.....(would also spark comments/debate etc )
It would modernise the look of the front page as well.
I don't go on the forum to buy wine but could be tempted if it's there right in front of me. ( no brainer mentality)
WF started it and I have bought from the advertising windows where normally I wouldn't of.

Anyway just my thoughts....enjoy the forum alot.

Panda 9D wrote:I was more replying to n4sir's post that maybe it would be a good idea to PM you first. I realise that wasn't coming from you. None of it applies to me as I'm in a completely different orbit to 99.9% of this forum's members. My point was just that a CD price is essentially the RRP and inhibiting even the discussion of that would be... excessive.

It gets a little tricky though when some cellar doors have been dumping wine at what is basically close to cost - you only have to think back to the Seppeltsfield VPs as a recent example, and there's been others. 98% of the time cellar door/winery sales are no threat to Gavin, but these sort of things have been more common lately with the grape glut.

In such cases it's probably worth a PM to Gavin at least out of politeness, and especially if it also happens to be something he is trying to sell - Steve (aka 707) certainly cleared it with Gavin and Bert in the above case, it's not too hard to wait for an okay before posting this stuff on Gavin's forum. :|

Cheers,
Ian

Agree with ross, and just another thought.... for we interstate buyers, Gavin could (if he doesn't already) have a running tally system, so that we could buy (and pay for) 2 of this one week, 4 of those the week after, whatever takes our fancy from the recently reviewed/hot topic/small production wines that you then advertise and when we have a dozen or two, could then get shipped. More work for Gav of course, maybe far too much work! But would certainly suit me, and no doubt a few others here who aren't up for regular dozen buys. I often want to buy 2 or 3 from you, but can't always manage to go for the whole dozen to make it worth your while. If I could buy a few here and there would be ideal. Understand if it's not feasible. (Maybe we've been down this thought path already?). But thought the concept was worth mentioning.

Cheers

That's a great idea Tim. Gavin will already hold bottles while you find something else that takes your fancy but it's a sort of a layby system so there's no big lumpy purchase to frighten the horses

The 'flavours of the month' are almost always available to me, not to mention a huge range of super rare and interesting imports.

However, I do not always 'stock these', have them in stock and on the web site, but can access almost any/everything!

If anyone is interested, anytime, simply ask! I will find for you!

Come in, and gone, as examples only

2009 Giaconda Nebbiolo, 2010 By Farr Chardonnay, Abbotts & Delaunay Alto Stratus Carignan 2010, Vouette et Sorbee Champagne, Cedric Bouchard champagne ... etc etc.

Oh, Gavin, you are getting on. 10 years? I starting loitering here, in its previous formats, in 1995 and I certainly wasn't the first person.

Try nearly 20 (possibly more) years of providing the best and usually friendliest wine forum (IMHO) in the world. Started when the interweb was very juvenille and only computer nerds had access. There's been a lot of people in and out over the years but this site has spawned more offlines (and held the very first Australian offline) than certainly any other Australian site.

There's been a few spin offs from here but I still believe this is the original and the best and I for one am loyal. I think, as in any forum, it's success comes down to basic manners and respect and that was the intent of the leading post on this topic.

All I can offer is my ongoing thanks to Gavin for being such a fine and generous bloke and friend.
Cheers,
Kris

We seem to have a few newbies on here posting links to online retailers, so I figure it's worth bumping this back up as a reminder.

Remember guys, Gavin provides us this place for free - please give him a little thought before posting any links to his competitors.

I am happy to post relevant info on retailers in Hong Kong, as I do not think they are in any way a competitor of Gavin. If people are going to HK and want to take wine home, I cannot see any problem in offering advice.
As for Aussie retailers, I wholeheartedly agree with you Ian.

Just remember folks, if you think you have stumbled across the bargain of the century, even the year, and want to shout it out to everyone, do yourself a favour and please PM Gavin Trott first just to make sure it's okay. Just the politeness of doing so will be much appreciated by all, and shows your intentions are genuine.

The flip side of not doing so will be that many such posts will be regarded as...

Something from the Pernod range, or maybe Constellation?

Apparently a very good match for SPAM & baked beans is a dodgy, cheap, slightly oxidised French dry white - if you have seen Oz & James Big Wine Adventure (which I recommend) you will know what I mean ;) :D

Time to bump this back up for some of the newbies to read.

Not a good look to mention other retailers here, and posting direct links to their websites is a definite no-no.

Other than that, welcome to the forum guys, it's a friendly place and I am sure you will have fun here.
