TN: 2007 Reinhard & Beate Knebel Winninger Rottgen Riesling

Post by n4sir »

2007 Reinhard & Beate Knebel Winninger Rottgen Riesling Spatlese, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer (cork): No.5. 11% alc. Medium straw/yellow. Very sweet and perfumed, mango, quince paste, honeysuckle, some lychee, heather honey and kerosene; the palate's just as sweet, with a viscous texture and more subtle hints of golden apple, tea, chalk and smoke that continue through the long finish. It isn't as punchy or as forceful as the 14% Winninger Brückstück Feinherb Spatlese, and is a much better wine because of that; perhaps there is some botrytis here too, but it just stops short of becoming cloying. It is drinking (perhaps) surprisingly well right now - will it shut down or continue to age this gracefully?

Nice note, always fun to see a Mosel TN. I have not bothered in the past to post any as i thought no-one would be interested :( .
I would sure cellar for a while but that is my custom for Germany.

thanks for the note. I also have some of this wine tucked away care of its importer. I had expected most of my 2007 would have shut down by now so the note is of particular interest. Perhaps I should seek out a bottle.

Bob, there is actually a very healthy interest in German rieslings among the posters here. A former poster became obsessed and brings into Australia about a third of the top Mosel rieslings. So any tasting notes would welcome.

...beautiful wine - thanks for the note.

If you're quick there's a bit of this floating around at various auctions....
