Barossa Shiraz Advice Please
Barossa Shiraz Advice Please
A friend of mine is looking to buy a dozen Barossa Shiraz for her brother in law as a birthday present. Criteria being in the $50 to $100 range and drinkable now but also cellarable as well. With so many 2010 and 2012 releases around this should be an easy task, but there are just so many to choose from, so I said I would give her a shortlist of five or so. I would like to include Rockford BP, but on the market now it is outside the range I fear. Also some more traditional lines like Lehmann Stonewell might be too oakey to broach now. If I could convince them to go to $130 it would be a no brainer for Mount Edelstone.
So what fits the above criteria that I can find around the traps? Thanks guys for your assistance.

2012 Sons of Eden Remus is a quality drop (although from Eden)
2010 or 2012 Penfolds Bin 150
Some of the 2012 Hentley Farm releases have been quite good as well - Beast, Beauty.

2010 Penfolds Bin 150 Shiraz
Should be still available around the traps at $50 or so, perhaps $60. Magnificent Barossa shiraz, truly remarkable, and it beat the pants off the 2010 St Henri amongst half a dozen Barossa shiraz tasted blind a few months ago in our group. (also beat 2010 RWT for that matter)
If you want serious reviews, Suckling gave it 98 points and named it in his best 10 releases for the year (irrespective of price)
Will see both again this Friday, at the Suckling extravaganza in Hong Kong

Thanks Felix and Andrew, good suggestion. The Bin 150 doesn't seem to get mentioned much around here, now I am thinking I should add a six pack myself to my Bin 389 stash from the 2012 vintage. I might pass this on to my friend as a good contender, especially as it is 'Penfolds'.

Any of the 2012 Standish releases, in particular The Standish and The Relic. Magnificent drops! Grab what you can still find.

+1. The Standish is the best young wine I've tasted in the last year.
Also, the 2012 Sami-Odi Baby Tui is stunning. I bought some directly from the winery a month ago. Might still be some left. The bottle and label is also very unique and would make a lovely gift.

Re: Barossa Shiraz Advice Please
I imagine at the lower end (or possibly beneath it) wines like 2012 Turkey Flat Shiraz and Kalleske Greenock Shiraz would be well recived. As mentioned above, a wine I'm a big fan of is the SoE Remus - both 2010 and 2012 are available (I have only opened the former). And then there's the polarising Greenock Creek wines - I believe the 2012s are available.
I know Gavin spends time in the region, he may have some harder to find wines on his site as well.
Cheers

Agree on the Sons of Eden Remus, incredible wine. Also the Eperosa Shiraz's (also at the bottom end of your price scale) were stunning.

If you had to choose between drinking great wine or winning Lotto, which would you choose - Red or White?
Re: Barossa Shiraz Advice Please
A couple of the Head wines, John Duval or Spinifex would be worth a look

Chuck a ringer in there from Vic or WA... or even the ACT.
