HKWS Vertical Drouhin's Griottes-Chambertin
The rumours are true -Griotte Chambertin, that juicy little noissette of spicy black-fruited wonder is our theme next week. One grape, one grand cru vineyard, one producer = total focus. 14 vintages should provide understanding. There's nothing more of consequence to be said except that you should be there!

Flint Bar & Grill in the JW Marriott Pacific Place Admiralty. Wines served blind though it didn't take long to ascertain they'd mistakingly been served youngest to oldest!

Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2004- Very complex, friendly aromas of fresh leather, red pinot fruit, smoke and many different nuances of cherry emerging with air.Sweet & savory, spicy slightly green wood notes, with youthful, grippy tannins building a finish that echoes the nose.
A successful 2004!
92pts +
2nd for me and the Group
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2002- Creamy, red confectionary nose, medium to full, loaded with fresh acidity that aids lingering tannins in ensuring a good persiatnace of flavor.
90pts+
6th for me and 9th for the Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2001-Sous Bois, truffles and a crushed rock like minerality- just a hint of meaty black fruits.Sadly austere, with a spicy-menthol note and hard edges though the finish long and well structured. Doubt if the fruit has the oomph to flesh this wine out appropriately.
89pts+
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2000- Simple yet complex. Developed, spicy red pinot fruit, the cedar wood notes have a hint of greenness. Spicy fruit and wood dominate a palate with that Gevrey hardness; leather textured grip on the finish.
88pts
8th for me and the Group.

Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1999- Mulchy pong, sweet fruited and autumnal, hard in the mouth, pine influenced sweet fruit flavors of moderate interest.
87pts
9th for me and 10th for the Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1998- Subdued, mature fruit notes dominated by red fruit and spice. Delightful oak integration, bracken edges with classci Griotte Chambertin meaty-spicy- blackfruits.Tannins flow nicely.
90pts
5th for me and 3rd for the Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1997- Undergroth and earth, mulchy fruit development, meaty black fruited fruit with prickly spice, hard acidity that not detracting on a talcum powder like tannin structure.
91pts
3rd for me WOTN for the Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1996-Faded fruit, subtle and with a mineral tang. Hard acidity, austere and faded fruits complete.
86pts
10th for me and 6th for the Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1995- Interesting secondary sticky red fruit notes, developed, some mineral and spice. Aromas carry through on the palate, complete wine where the hardness is texturally offset by freshness and fruit sweetness ( al a good Gevrey Chambertin )- good wine!
90pts
4th for me and 5th for Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1994-Ethereal, light red fruits, astringent and hard.
80pts
11th for me and the Group.

Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1993- Great expression of the terroir. Spicy, blackberry or meaty black fruits, more smokey black fruited echoes. Complete wine, smokey flavor persistence similar to nose.
92pts
WOTN for me and 4th for Group.
Joseph Drouin Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 1988- Corked!

Dinner Wines-

2001 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Spatlese- Beautiful riesling and the penultimate palate cleanser! Just divine.
93pts

2007 R&V Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru "Forest"-1er Cru at a Grand Cru quality. This stuff is amazing. Punchy, with cheesy sea shell notes and a strong mineral backbone which drives the wine home forcefully. Fantastic stuff and I have a glass for this arvo!
95pts
Oh and the young unnamed lass over the table from me who bagged the wine but likes Ravenau Grand Cru Chablis only- hopefully your drinking broadens somewhat so you can recognize brilliance when you drink it. Hmmmm…HKG frustrates me sometimes!

2007 Hospices de Beaune Greves 1er Cru Montille- Great fun, drink now 2007 in jeroboam. Not much to the wine but lighthearted and enjoyable.
89pts
Thx to Linden Wilkie whom you may have read about from his pretty amazing tutored dinners through the Fine Wine Experience.

Agree with you 100 per cent re Dauvissat and the aforesaid unnamed young lass must be full of it as I didn't spot a bottle of Raveneau of any kind in 3 days of poking around the major bricks and mortar wineshops in a very recent visit to Hong Kong.

Jamie, another disappointing 96 Burg. So many failures from a vintage the experts are still calling great, but my experience of the vintage is all too often the same as your's tonight. Any chance further age may improve it? I have some Griottes from Fourrier that vintage, not tried yet, but not expecting too much. The Fourrier CSJ 96 is a pretty pedestrian wine.
PS got yr PM, many thanks… I'm coming over to HK this Tuesday for some stuff, let me know if there is any way I can get the six pack of Zalto off you. If not, I am sure we can arrange to get at one of your amazing dinners if you get the spare seat.
No good next Friday, in Borocay for the weekend

Boracay? 7000 islands in the fillies and you pick Boracay!
No prob's, I'm in China for 5 days, we'll sort something out. I'm in Sai Kung now so may be difficult to organize whereas prior, my Harbor City apartment would have been simple.
Linden Wilkie put together this gig and I suggest you look him up as he runs business putting together old wine dinners of significant acclaim that generally attract the owners- Vega Sicilia last month back to the 30's/

haha, yes, Boracay is mixing work with a very small dose of pleasure (golf), still, it kicks the pants out of the gold coast!!!!
Yes, he seems to have pretty special dinners, i am going to the Pape Clement v Haut Bailly one in a few weeks. Pape Clement is a favourite of mine, and I also got a bit of Haut Bailly so it should be interesting. No doubt we will cross paths soon enough, then can organise the glasses. Mucho gracias

Re: HKWS Vertical Drouhin's Griottes-Chambertin
I asked her what the hell was wrong with the wine. I know, wine is subjective, but I smelt bullshit here and hence the stupidity of the Raveneau comment. Oh, and the fault, too much battonage evidently! Now I'm not really interested in technicals but I swear the mineral drive in these wines suggests very little battonage and on research this was confirmed.
Getting old and grumpy.
