2010 Penfolds Grange (and other 2014 releases)

Hi All

Just wondering what the thoughts are on the upcoming Penfolds release, specifically the 2010 Grange. First reports are saying it's going to be amazing (big surprise) and there's some places accepting pre-sale allocations - but it is quite a hefty price tag. I'm guessing the other releases (eg. 2011 St Henri) won't be particularly amazing?

The reviews would have to be pretty amazing (like 100pt scores across several critics) and the price to drop (through the big chains) pretty significantly to tempt me.

When the new release date was announced back in June the suggested RRP (ie cellar door prices) for the releases hadn't changed. Not sure if that's still the case, but I haven't heard anything to date to suggest otherwise - that of course could change closer to 14th October, it certainly did last year in the case of the 2008 Grange after the 100 point score Lisa Perotti Brown MW of Wine Advocate gave it.

Just a little side note. One wine auction house has a 1990 St Henri. What is interesting is the original price sticker is still on it. $19.99! Run that through the RBA inflation calculator and in todays money it would be $33.95.

Gee only $4 grand plus assumed brokers fee...an absolute bargain

Haven't seen much Grange "hate". I'm sure the 2010 Grange will be fantastic...Luxury Icons are tough to put a price on...

I think people are annoyed at the prices of the other stuff.....

Yeah I was going to pre-release order - but am having difficult justifying it and grange is one of those things it's easy enough to buy on the secondary market for around the same price. Might just save it for the 'best ever' St Henri 2012

Well, sheer greed. Or the 'Australian price premium" or whatever it's called.
They're all the same, the Penfolds premiums. I bought the 1993 Bin 389 for $15. You can't get the 2010 for better than, what... $60?
I run that through my calculator and I find that's 8.5% increase every single year for 18 straight vintages.
The 1989 Grange was widely available for $100. If the 2009 was $650, that's near enough to 10%, year-on-year.

In the outstanding vintages, the wines might be worth it. In the other 6 years out of 7 we're being taken for a ride.
Dunno why people fall for it.

I make of it that the inflationary based pricing model is not that commonly used for luxury goods and an unreliable guide to pricing the product over 20 years.
I also make of it that Penfolds have changed their stratgey, and unfortunately their premium brands target a market that doesn not include me. To be fair i stopped buying Penfolds years ago.
I also make of it that Penfolds are entitled to do this....most companies in this market have at some point or another (e.g. Petrus, Lafite). They'll either succeed or come crawling back.

Finally i make of it that its great certain wineries/companies still keep their pricing increase at or below inflation and support one of these companies regularly (Rockford). But i struggle with the constant whinging that Craig for example, can no longer add to his significant cellar certain australian icons at the terrific prices of the past.
To read anyone continually rant how a massive corporate changed its pricing strategy to a level that they are now excluded is painful IMO.
At least you got great prices then, enjoy what you have...its more than most (inc me). Find a substitute, there are plenty, and get over it ffs.

Perhaps a seperate thread called 'Evil companies that no longer covet my custom' would be a win-win.
And maybe another to debate Chinese economics come to think of it

If I hear anyone complain about grange prices when the cheapest bottle of it i Have was over $400 I may lose it.

It's like how people whinge how much their Mortgage is for a house they bought in 1997, before it tripled to its current price.

At the end of the day these people are in business. If they can get people to pay $600 a bottle why would they want to sell to me for half that? Sure I'd love it if they did but I'm not gonna hate them because they don't.

So yesterday I had a chat with someone who was at the pre-release tasting in Melbourne just the other day. He couldn't say too much about the 2010 Grange as that's obviously under embargo. He did say that those who gave the 2008 100 points are going to have a problem as the 2010 is much better. He was extremely impressed with it.

The folks at Winefront gave the 2010 Grange 96pts, the same as the 2008, although the tasting note seems to suggest the 2010 is slightly superior to the 2008.

I bought the Bin 707 from 1990 at $25, not too far away from your $19-99 price, but if you compare current 707 vs. St Henri, well, the 707 horse has well and truely bolted! Where is it? $250 or so??

No one is too concerned what people paid for Grange, nor are they when you have a whinge about price... which is acknowledged by 000s (including those who work for the company) as becoming increasing out of reach for Mr and Mrs Joe Public.

Was quite impressed (apart from 45 minute delay) with the Penfolds clinic here in Adelaide this week.
Finally caught up with Moira and had a quick chat...was very good to meet her.

Bottles I presented had a jiffy lube and are ready to go for another 10-15 years.
