1996 Dom Perignon

Was out for a big night last weekend, but ended up with a GRAND night. Can't complain.....

To start, the 1996 Dom Perignon.
Had never had a glass of Dom prior to this as thought it too pricey, but after this, I am looking for more to stock the cellar.
Lovely miniscule bubbles were the first sign of something special. The nose was a complex integration of mushroomy-yeasty earthiness, and a sweetness reminescent of candied strawberries.
The explosion of flavours on the palate was dumbfounding! Initial fruity sweetness with a light souffle mouthfeel gave way to the earthy bready-yeasty mid and back palate I so love in french bubblies (only exemplified here). All this with an excellent acid zestiness in the background. Nuances of good frernch brie, and muscadels resurface and linger after swallowing, for a minute maybe. I have never had tastes linger like that from a gulp of champagne!!! Beautiful stuff...........

I was wondering if I could ask you all for further advice re: recent vintages to procure, and cellering potential.

I had since rushed out to purchase 3 bottles of the 1996 Dom for about $185 in the dozen. Wondering how long I can keep these for as they this is an anniversary year.

If you loved the 1996 I would say get onto some 1995 ! The 1995 is drinking beautifully. The 1996 is super tight right now imo and will be amazing in years to come.

Had this 3 weeks ago. I drink a fair amount of Champagne and rate this as one of the 5 greatest young Champagne's i have ever tasted. Cristal 1996 is seriously good as is the 1990 Krug Clos de Mesnil though a silly price. The 1996 Dom P has everything, lovely weight of fruit, a rich almost craemy texture and great acidity. This wine has 10-20 years ahead of it. At Xmas i had a 1966 and it was still delicious. I would opt for buying as many as you cannot afford! :lol:

How much are they worth??

Any idea how the 1990 Cristal is going
I tried a 6 years or so ago and it was closed green and unyielding

I was in a restaurant in 1992 and they gave me a bottle of 1973 from memory and it was drinking briliantly so Dom certainly can age well.

Michel, tried this about a year ago and it is starting to develop the lovely toasted brioche characters, with honey nuts and citrus on the palate. Still fresh, and no rush, but if you are lucky enough to have a few i would crack one. Don't think it will be as good as the 1996 though.... but delicious nevertheless!

Don't let the 1996 DP slip away. It blew my wine group away served blind.
I have put a 6 pack away, along with the Cristal....... enough money left for a couple of UDL's now!

I would have thought the bready, yeasty Dom would have been the perfect preventative. Oh well.
