What was the best surprise you ever found in your cellar?

Post by sjw_11 »

I was thinking about the topic on how you arrange your wine and I noticed how many people enthused about chaos (something I can relate to given my level of disorganisation) on the basis of the surprise when you uncovered a forgotten gem ...

So I was wondering, what is the best surprise you have ever got out of your own cellar? A forgotten gem, a purchase you didnt remember, a brown snake crawled in for a sleep?

For me, it was the seemingly endless supply of half bottles of Heggies 1983 Botrytis which I bought foolishly at auction in 2004 and never seem to run out of (though the happy ending was about the 6th bottle last year which was remarkably good after 5 bottles down the drain!).

There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.

Wendouree. I never knew I had any until I found some Shiraz/Malbec or Cab/Malbec, still not sure what it is. All I know is I buried it deep and expect I will find it again in 10 years when it might be drinkable.

Not mine but my dads - a bottle of 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A. Unfortunately the wine was past its best, taken to the last recorking clinic and it was confirmed dead. Level was well below shoulder with some seepage.

Also found a six pack of 2002 Basket Press in a family friends cellar which he didn't know existed!

Nice Michel
To find one bottle would be wonderful, but 6 is just crazy!
They did a masterclass (Moose & BM) in Sydney at La Paulee a few months back. Tiny crowd, tickets didnt even go on sale but Red Smurf (poster here) managed to nab one...said it was truly epic.

Nothing super exciting, but a couple of weeks ago I found a bottle of 2009 De Iuliis Steven Vineyard Shiraz that I had bought 4 and thought I'd had them all.

Just little things like that happen every now and then.

I am lucky to have a large cellar, mostly racked, but with plenty of wooden boxes also stacked in the available spaces. Left front Burgundy, left rear Bordeaux, right rear White Burgundy, Rhone and other European, right front more Burgundy and Australian. Middle about 50 crates. No more ordered than that, so there isn't a visit that goes by where I am not extremely pleasantly surprised about a bottle or case I didn't know I had. :D
Of course, there is the added bonus of early dementia, so I can get a big surprise looking at the same bottle four weeks in a row!!!!!!!!!
