Stupid me with all the traffic on this thread forgot to send off his mailer.
I rang the winery last Thursday and had a lovely conversation with Lita.
Said my order was in the post...did not seem to be a concern with her.

All is ok, they work through the orders, there will be some fat in the system re more punters getting what they want re "unrestricted" limits on the wines, bar the shiraz.

I asked about the Gold Star being top of the tree in terms of the pecking order...Lita laughed her head off
She said after I hang up she would tell the winery crew during afternoon tea to watch out for all the gold stars!!

That said, if I don't get my allocation, will have to work a bit quicker next year.

My CC has been charged for a full order. My mailer was lost in the post so Lita took my order over the phone.

Very few Australian wines I can justify buying being an expat. Mostly price, some of it taste with high alcohol-cough medicine given a wide berth these days. For instance, Mt Edelstone, a favorite, a classic Australian shiraz with my 88's to 94's drinking beautifully. A world class wine without doubt and I've presented it so many times abroad with international drinkers who concur- and the one's who didn't I served it blind with Hermitage in the mix to extract some honesty in light of a New World snobbery. Anyways, so for 1 x Mt Ed, I can buy 2 x bottles of Mascarello Barolo.

So it's only now Wendouree that I buy and begrudgingly Rockford black bubbles for my wife - wow had wonderful glass of 94 en magnum the other day.

So if or when the Aussie dollar drops, I'll revisit Australian wines but until then it's really only Wendouree. And I do like the style. Many will find if they gravitate toward northern Italy with their Old World palate Wendouree will be a very enjoyable style at home and a superb presentation of Clare.

At least your in front of me. I received my first mailer on the 25th July. Admittedly I only asked to join the list on the 10th July hoping to start from next year. I was a little surprised to get a mailer at all this year. I sent an order for 6 of everything except the Muscat with fingers crossed. I'm also in Sydney. So mse I'd suggest you have more chance than me.

Meanwhile, I couldn't contain myself, and I rang Wendouree. Lita Brady answered, and may I say, she is a most gracious person. A few gems of wisdom she imparted to me:
- 1991 was the best year at Wendouree she has seen in 40 years of winemaking, and she is a qualified winemaker. Anyone who has any Malbec magnums should be in no hurry to drink them.
- 2012 is a more cabernet friendly year than shiraz.
- 2009-1012 are more approachable years, perhaps due to warmer conditions, wine making technique has not changed. 2013 has reverted back to a more classic style of old.
- and something I am excited about, I am getting my full order processed tomorrow

I wouldn't have guessed 1991 would have been the standout year over the last 40. Not sure if anyone else has any insights into why.

Interesting as well re the style change being mainly weather dependent. I think most people were guessing the change was permanent.

Welcome to the forum
Lita Brady mentioned that 1991 had cool nights and was dry, making for long lived, structured wines.

As an aside to this, I read on another forum that Wendouree don't process orders for only shiraz. That would explain why I didn't receive my order last year.

I have followed these forums in the background for a while but thought I should actually start contributing.

Spreading the order has worked well for me so far. I have been on the list for 4 years and received all if not most of my allocation each time. Although I don't just do it to get an allocation, rather because the other wines excite me just as much as the Shiraz.

Some of the other wines excite me MORE than the Shiraz! I've never actually seen it argued that the Shiraz is the best wine, only that, with its higher Langton's classification it is the most desirable trophy wine!

1991 and 1996 were the birth years of my two daughters, and they are both drinking very nicely (the wine, that is), especially the '91s. I have backfilled quite a bit on the '91s. However the best Wendouree wine was at a Wendouree offline last year and it was a 1990 Cab Malbec kindly brought by Polymer (Kevin) and it was just surreal. The best Wendouree I have tasted.

It has taken me many years and disappointments via a dozen or so of tastings to say the Cab Malbec is the best wine. It has that extra dimension the shiraz lacks. And even then you may find eucalypt notes in the wine in some vintages that throws it out of balance, at least for my tastes.

I asked Lita Brady this question today, and whilst she doesn't believe it is questionable, she doesn't know how slowly they will age compared to the cork. More slowly, yes, but with minimal failure and more certainty as well. My vote is for screw cap.

My card was hit today and it is my 13th vintage. So I don't think all hope is lost yet especially when they declared no limit for the wines except Shiraz. I have never seen unlimited availability before.

btw: some notes will be coming soon on a tasting held Mon 28th July featuring a range of 14 Wendouree wines.
The TCA rate was appalling with some of the earlier vintage wines. 7/20 bottles faulty. The backups were generally superb.

Those old Wendouree boxes were great for collecting kindling, as they are longer then the usual size wine boxes.
I still use them. Kindling is so important when I have to start an open fire each winter night.
I am still waiting for my credit card to be attacked from Wendouree.

Jamie, is that one of the 4 or 5 cellars you have round the globe... from an earlier post in this thread it appears even with boxes from the photo stacked to the ceiling there is another 60+ dozen somewhere else.
Great photo, perhaps the Wendouree can be the wedding wine.

Yes my two lads at 18 and 20 have about 500 bottles to get through at some stage, they have expressed interest in keeping the mailer going
