2012 Shaw & Smith Shiraz

Post by Rory »

Recently voted best Australian Shiraz (entered in) International Wine Challenge.
I'm a fan of this label, have been purchasing a pack each year only since '09.
This is right on the money. Lifted aromatics showing the evident high quality fruit and winemaking. The palate echoes this, with a big lift of high quality cool climate fruit across the middle palate. Great structure, oak handling and acid.
Perhaps to be in the outstanding category, the palate length could have been longer, but everything else is excellent.

Opened one of these just the other night to sample before putting a few away and I agree Rory, a very nice wine and I think excellent value at the money

A friend brought over a bottle of this a few weeks ago and it was very enjoyable. The balance and the cool climate fruit made the greatest impression to me.

I recall having an 07 a couple of years ago and that too with a few years on it was a very good drink.

A very nice drop indeed Rory ! I've only tasted the 2012's ( very much enjoyed the M3 Chardonnay as well) - so thanks Wayno, nice to hear the 07 is drinking well. I was wondering about the Shiraz's track record in the cellar - I've read review's recommending anything from 2 to 8 years ? So easy to drink now, however.
My wife and I visited the cellar door in April - quite an interesting experience. We enjoyed the Shiraz so much, we had it again at dinner the next night down the coast a bit at the Victory Hotel.

Cheers

This is one of my go-too wines for business lunches ... not overly priced but pretty well recognised, and of course a much safer choice being Chardonnay than some other white varieties (I never lived down the time I ordered a riesling!! philistines).

Haha philistines indeed. I think we are cut from the same cloth there Sam, also one of my go to whites for business lunches if I am with someone who is not going to really appreciate something better/different or if it is a more casual thing

Interesting to read Jeremy Pringle's underwhelming review of the 2013 M3 Chardonnay as being "high acid and slim", although he does state it is "in desperate need of more time in the bottle". Guess I'll have to wait 'till August and see for myself.

Haven't tasted the 2013, but the 2012 M3 was spot on and to be honest I can't expect anything less from this great producer. I'd have to agree that M3 is a go to wine - it's consistently on my dinner table more than any other White! The 2012 Shiraz deserved every bit of it's accolade as Aussie's best Shiraz. Cool climate Shiraz at it's best!
