Auctions
Re: Auctions
Just had a quick look at the 'upgraded' Langtons site - it seems to have regressed in ease of use on the auctions side. Difficult to skim through the lots and despite the flashy pictures there is not enough detail of the wines without having to click through. I can see this putting people off browsing through.
Re: Auctions
Yeah..it is terrible..You can fit 3 wines on a screen...You can then drill down into it to see the different lots if there are different lots....
But basically, skimming through what is there takes forever...You can search via name, you can search by country (but not multiple countries) but if you want to actually look at what is there you have to use the PDF because actually going through the list takes a long time...
The site is slow too...stupidly slow....

Re: Auctions
Tons of stuff not working properly, search is garbage.
Previous auction result, only page 1 comes up, then you have to search for something specific to get anything else. Plus there was a bunch of 'testauctions' that they forgot to delete.
Typical pathetic (and probably overpriced) tryhard web dev job, no doubt promised the world, now frantically making excuses why it's so crap.
And forcing a c/card upon everyone is terrible policy. Just charge them a late fee for non-payment I say.

Re: Auctions
Ah yes, Woolies with the biggest IT budget in the country and 100s of in-house IT people cant get a web site right... The time and money it took to launch Dan Murphy online... the mind boggles.
And people think big government can work... even the for profit firms cant manage to be efficient above a certain size.

Big anything has problems. The idea that the private sector will always be more efficient that the public sector is nothing more than a self-serving myth. There are a lot of terrible websites in the public sector, while some are dreams despite being very complex.
Ditto the private sector. Each site should be judged on its specific merits rather than as a private v public thing.

Re: Auctions
Searching for wine price history is shocking. Searching Penfolds Bin 707 came up with 7357 wine price valuations and took at least a minute to come up with the search. Not good enough.

Re: Auctions
Understand teething problems, but there's too many issues with the new Langtons site.
Seemingly went live a little too prematurely.
Where do you start.?!?
testing, testing 1-2-3.....

Re: Auctions
I'm giving it a miss for a few days. Froze my computer up twice and had to recover the page a few times as well. And I run a fairly decent computer.
Re: Auctions
The new Langtons doesn't even recognise my login. Nor does "forgotton my password" seem to work either. Unless they're going to send out emails once every 24 hours.
I was going to refrain from criticising their display - showing a 1700-lot auction at the rate of 10-a-page - until I can login and get a more sensible display.
Let me guess - that's the best they can do, right?
Useless noddies...

Graeme: Looks like it...It is 10 at a time, 3 on the screen (at 1920x1080) and you have to scroll down...hit show more to see 10 more..it is really cumbersome...They do make it so on a single wine for a given vintage, that one listing is all the listings (there is a sub menu to see the rest)...but yeah, still really really cumbersome and I haven't found a way to change it...
It looks nicer..but definitely not very functional so far..the search is really really poorly thought out...

New to the forum and actually first post - keen to chat more and learn plenty about wine.
I have a fair collection, mostly household names and have been contemplating potentially selling some as not getting through them as quickly as I used to.
Have looked at a few auction sites, esp. those mentioned below as well as eBay.
Does anyone know of a more effective way of selling??
Keen to hear thoughts.
Cheers, Highlander
Hey mate,
I have recently used Marks site Wickmans Auctions, I cant fault the experience, great wine at great prices, good communication, and fast delivery....give him a go

Forcing registration of credit card details just to be able to make a bid, a week or so after all the publicity about the heartbleed bug? How idiotic is that?
Almost as idiotic as their inaccurate search engine, and their slow loading website - I can't wait to see how slow it gets around the closing time of an auction.
The old Langtons website cost millions to develop, a lot of time to get right, and Woolies has replaced it with this big, stinking heap of crap - Wickmans, Oddbins and Sterlings should expect a lot more vendors and customers coming their way soon.
My 2c,
Ian

Re: Auctions
G'day
Sterling Auctions in Perth introduced freight free a year or so ago, but removed the option to pick up from their premises. Personally, I would rather pick up (as Australia Post does not handle the wine like I would), but I figured I would have to live with free freight.
Now Sterling has introduce a $16.50 freight charge with no announcement whatsoever - and no option for pick up.
Not happy, and I have not proceeded with the bids I was about to make.
Cheers
Allan

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Well, I thought it was just me with Langtons' new website. I struggled to login at all and browsing was hard going. My wallet is pretty happy with these developments.

Re: Auctions
I was going to list several thousand dollars worth of wine for sale, but after trying the new website, have decided to keep the wine instead. No point listing wine if no-one can bid...

Re: Auctions
The best way I am navigating around is using the filters to filter only the wines that I want to look at. You have to reset though for another search, which can be a bit cumbersome. The bidding interface I don't mind. I haven't found a problem bidding. Getting to the wine you want to bid on is the problem.

Hi Allan
This must be a recent change as a few months ago I received free freight when I paid within 24hrs?

Re: Auctions
Just want to add..I can't even remove items off my bid list on the new langtons...
Re: Auctions
Well looks like its just oddbins and Wickams for me...have been most happy with both.
Wont have to pay a delivery fee and won't have to put up with more glitzy bullshit that does not work.
What was wrong with the old site...nothing.
That said if langtons give me another complimentary membership I may be tempted.
Cheers Craig
PS. Mike have you finally brought enough champagne that you have no more room, or are those 89, 90 and 91s being shared about?

Re: Auctions
Despite the reservations I have with the Langtons design I still thought I would give them one last chance and try bidding. I regretted it. Will not be using their new site.
Re: Auctions
It is terrible..no countdown...the wednesday auction just got moved..it is really poorly written...A lot of bugs still too..
Re: Auctions
Has anyone bought from Ebay? Wondering what sort of rep they have??

Same for me. I'm preparing for my annual cellar clean out. I've used Langtons before and was going to just send off again but will send elsewhere, it's easier. I've been buying a couple off Sterling lately, I think I'll make it my regular seeing Langtons have forgotten what customer service is.

Wickmans > all.
If i can't find what I'm looking for on Wickmans then i hesitantly resort to Langtons. Most the time i can be patient and wait for Wickmans even though I was recently outbidded on the 1962 Bin 60a... .

Re: Auctions
Langtons $5 reserve auction appears to have miraculously drawn in a heap of bidders that are all prepared to pay exactly the same price for certain wines.
Check out woodlands 2013 cab merlot, more than 10 lots of 6 and 10 lots of 12 all sitting on $13
2010 Paolo Savino Barolo, several lots all $77, I guess everyone loves the number 77 and it just reflects the true value of that wine
Same with many others on the list
Is this not false advertising?
That is clearly a $13 reserve on an advertised $5 reserve auction

I was thinking the same thing.
Re: Auctions
Are we looking at the same thing? All show $3 to me.
