Animals at wineries

Post by Travelwriter1 »

I'm an American travel writer on assignment for COAST & COUNTRY magazine. I'm trying to find out about wineries anywhere in Australia that have animals. The animal(s) could be pet dogs or cats, rabbits, birds, donkeys -- anything animal is good. Can you give me any leads?

PLease email me directly at sunreader@optusnet.com.au as I have trouble accessing this forum to read answers. Thank you!

Gillian,
Many wineries have cellar door dogs and/or cats of various types, Chambers in Rutherglen used to have quite a few. Bullers (also Rutherglen) have a bird sanctuary/aviary at CD. Ric (TORB) has visited quite a few wineries this year, he may be able to add a few.

I'm pretty sure some of the "animals" (eg football club teams of various codes) travel by bus from winery to winery scoffing as much free wine as they can. :-) It's usually best to avoid places who have 'Buses welcome' signs.

There is a book about cellar door dogs etc and available at cellar doors throughout - McLaren Vale I noticed it but did not take any notice after that.

Contact one of the wineries and I'm sure they will be able to give some info.

The only animals on our vineyard are chickens (which we've introduced) and kangaroos and parrots (who've introduced themselves).

Though our partners in the vineyard do bring down their dopey dog.... :D

You want wine dogs, which was written up in a recent edition of AGT Wine.

Well I just got back from Noon and they have the biggest dog I have ever seen who just wants to jump on you! Even Drew could barely contain the dog! The name's Merle and believe me he/she' close to six foot!
