"Is selling" is a dubious term. My guess is that they will be languishing in the duty free store for some time to come. But hey, what do I know?

Read this and my immediate thoughts turned to wondering if it will be stored as well as all of the other duty free wines that I've purchased have been. read: they've mostly been cooked to some degree.

I try to only buy spirits duty free and not vino these days. There's better places to get it and the discounts aren't as good as they used to be. Happy to be corrected.

Last sell price for a 750ml at Langton's auctions was $69 (excluding commission). This makes $500 seem rather optimistic. Or maybe $69 just seems cheap for a pretty historic Australian wine...

See that 82 Riddoch sold for $420 last week, only needs to drop another 200 or so for what would be a far more realistic price. The idiot that paid close to $800 a year or so ago might be having his reality check as we speak.

$200? ...and the freakin' rest! I'd never pay $220 for an '82 Riddoch. Why pay that when you can get the excellent '84 and outstanding '88 for around 50 all up? Can't remember the last time I had a bad one of either? But Craig, it seemingingly only takes threads like this to highlight the fact and the "dickheads" out there just bid their arses off against each other and next thing the price goes through the roof.

Once the '82 JR went for $500 plus, I just shook my head and said "here we f@#$%^g go again".

Personally, I think the latter given that 1982 Noble One is such a historic Australian wine - bottles in excellent condition are consistently outstanding, with absolutely no sign of deteriorating soon.

A couple of years ago (around the time 1982 Riddoch spiked when it was also in its 30th anniversary) it was selling for around $100-120 at auction, so anything under $100 seems cheap to me ($69 is a steal - if the bottle is in good condition). At the Noble One & Sauternes vertical last year Nick Guy mentioned they made a heck of a lot of that inaugural vintage, resulting in a steady stream of bottles on the secondary market which in turn has kept the price down. I think someone mentioned there was a lot of the 1982 John Riddoch made too for that matter.

Could not agree more David...particularly when I have just picked up 2 1984 JRs quite recently ( that are obviously unaffected by the 30 year anniversary thing ) for $44 each.

Yes its always amazed me the amount of money paid for a product that is about 86% water.

71 Grange...was given 3 bottles by my Godfather for my 21st...release price $9! from the Royal Oak in O'connell St. North Adelaide.

Now we're talkin!

I think the problem is that we forumites are not the marginal buyer being targetted here...

For example, I was at drinks on Friday night and there was a gentlemen who simply ordered another bottle of Billercart Rose each time the last became empty for a whole table of his "friends" (who just happened to be all girls, well all girls and me... I have a great power of sourcing free beverages)... At Singapore rates, I dread the think the cost. Did he just really, really like Billercart? ... Or did he really, really like showing off?

For a lot of people, wine is a luxury product which can be used to show off the same as a LV handbag or an expensive watch. For which purpose, the more expensive, the better
