The 2 Penfolds wines you mentioned are made for the long term, and hence you are not seeing them at their full potential. Having said that, my recent tastings of the current release of Penfolds wines I have been disappointed, except the RWT. The Lake Breeze is made to be consumed within a few years of release and is a good value for money wine.
So in relation to your original question "am I missing something" the answer is "no". The world of wine is not easy, just because you spend a lot of money on wine, does not guarantee it is going to be a great wine.

Been trying some nice reds lately but one that took me by surprise Saturday night just gone was a Barwang Hilltops Shiraz (2007). I absolutely loved it. I will try another bottle this coming weekend to confirm my thoughts (we'd already had a couple of beers and a bottle of Yalumba The Scribbler 2010 which was good). Has anyone else been surprised by the Barwang Shiraz? I must try their Cabs to see if they are as good.

Do youself a favour and try the 2010 Gomersal Wines Shiraz. It is available online and has plenty of tannin, but also lashings of dark fruit. It's a cracking wine and after reading this thread, I'd be surprised if you don't like it.

No, it's called the "2010 Reserve Shiraz" It's $25 direct from the winery.
