Forest Hill Block 8 Chardonnay 2007

Post by Waiters Friend »

This is a recent auction purchase. I wasn't sure whether these would be past it, or in decline. I could not have been more wrong.

Pale yellow colour (much lighter than the Howard Park of the same year). The nose is initially a little closed, with some lemon and nectarine. It opens up a little with moderate cedary oak and peach. On the palate, the flavours become more prominent along with a nutty character and clean acidity. A very long finish - I could taste the wine for ages.

I'm not sure this tasting note is doing it justice. This is a superb wine, and maybe it is more about the balance and the tautness of the wine. It is definitely more than the sum of the parts described in the previous paragraph.

I have a couple more bottles. Happy days!

Thanks, Allan... I have one of those and a few 07 FH Estate Rieslings, which are also delightful. Great Southern does fabulous Rieslings with delightful tautness and fresh acidity.

I ordered a dozen Byron & Harold Tandem Riesling 2011 for $123 delivered on the mention of Forest Hill fruit and the winery's winemaker being involved in its production. Great Southern and its subregions shade Margaret River for me, Forest Hill Vineyard one of the best producers in all of WA. Their Estate range is good value, even more so when often found cheaper elsewhere than from cellar door.

An update, 16 months later. This wine hasn't moved much - slightly more savoury than last year's bottle, and slightly less fruit (no surprise), but is still a very good wine. In fact, it is probably now a better food wine, while still being pretty good on its own. Good juice!

Cheers
