Favourite $10-$15 big quaffing Shiraz or Cab.

Post by TravisW »

Evening all,

A mate has just emailed me asking for recommendations of big Shiraz or Cabs (or I dear say blends) in the $10-$15 region. Preferably something widely available please as I don't think he is up for ordering from a winery etc.

I mentioned Wynn's CSM which can be found around these parts for $13.50.

All suggestions will be passed on... and hopefully drunk.

Cheers, Travis.

My favourite is Teusner Riebke Shiraz and Balnaves The Blend. Living in Perth, I'm still looking for good Margaret River Cab at that price range.

Edit: Sorry I misread the price range (accessing using my phone so was a little blurry :-)), but still love to hear any suggestions.
The truth is out there...

I just tried the West Cape Howe Cab Merlot 2011 @ $14 and it was the best sub $30 bottle of fruit flavor that I have had for many a while. Not much tannin backbone though, so maybe not a longterm cellar proposition, but who cares!

'Quaffers law' states that any online thread requesting quaffing recommendations, eventually leads to Mike Press wines.

With Hoddles creek & tabhilk making up the minor placings.

Yalumba Scribbler is a decent option for a Shiraz/Cab blend ... although just a touch over $15.

Kaiken Ultra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 - from Mendoza, $9.90/bottle.

I reckon this one wins by a landslide, even over Mike Press. Hard for Australia to compete with South America and/or South Africa on the QPR scale nowadays.

It's a cracker, I wish I bought more than 6.

Mike Press

Even Red Knot MacLaren Vale Shiraz is very good at $12
