National Sparkling Red Day - 18 June

The theory is that National Sparkling Red Day is held on the 3rd Tuesday in June, so this year it lands on 18 June 2013. I don't know how they came up with that date, but sounds pretty similar to how the Melbourne Cup date is calculated, and by rights, National Sparkling Red Day should be celebrated equally as hard and as wide. What are your tips on what to open on this auspicious day? I think my dream wine to open would be a toss up between the 1994 Seppelts Show Sparkling Shiraz (Extended Lees version) or the 1997 Peter Rumball. Seeing as though I don't own either, I might have to go with either a Primo Joseph or Teusner MC.

Anyone else planning to celebrate?

I wasn't aware of NSRD. If I get home in time, I might pull the cork on 2006 (disg) Rockford Black.

If I was to celebrate this day it'd be a Primo Joseph. Beautiful drop.

The primo is Great when its a Good bottle but I have had too many average bottles - seems to be super fragile. The seppelts for me or even better a yalumba d.

I hope it is not true but knowing yalumba it is probably true.

From what I can see, the 2004 was the last vintage for the D but I don't ever recall seeing it. I may have to see if i can find one/some

Am one of the few people I know that enjoy the stuff so have a few options in the cellar

Still have a couple of 1994 Lehmann Black Queens floating around so seems a good excuse to crack one......or maybe a Rockford Black sparkling...or a Seppelt show reserve ?..

That's true. They stopped making it with the 2004 being the last vintage. They flogged their last stocks off on one of the online discount sites. I've tried it and don't rate it as highly as others do. Having said that, I'm no red bubbles fan but even the wife did not enjoy it and she loves the style.

Rockford Black Shiraz is still her favourite by a long way. The 2012 Disgorgement is the best for a long time. Tuesner make a decent one as well. I've tried many and have to agree with her. The 1991 Seppelt Sparkling Burgandy that Nick bought to our last Brisbane offline was exceptional and the 1994 Seppelt Show Reserve that Gerry bought to one of our Langtons offlines are about the best non - Rockford examples that I've had as well.

The 97 Rumball is not overly hard to source and not particularly expensive so my tip is to make your dreams come true. A quick google search "1997 rumball sparkling shiraz" brings up 3 different retailers who have it in stock within the first 4 results.

It is a very good wine BTW

I have had the 1997 Rumball before and was surprised how it's still available. Would much rather have this than the big house champagne NV's

Speaking of Yalumba D I am even more saddened that the Yalumba D Chard/Pinot was ceased about 15 years ago, apart from Salinger was easily the best sparkler in Australia...IMHO. It was one of my wedding wines and the winery at the time "organised" a few cases for the occasion.

look forward to the notes on the 94 seppelts show, got 6 of these under crown seal for the lads birth year.

A lot on 'junk' days around but this one deserves more attention.
For me the Leasingham Classic Clare, have a 6 pack of the 98 around the place. Still drinks nicely.
Black shiraz.
Don't mind the Bleasedale for a cheap quaffer and the majella is OK.

Until a couple of years ago I had the same problem with the Joseph, they varied a bit. But I've enjoyed the last few disgorgements rather a lot...

I like the Rockford Black in the right context its a big rich beastie - and also the Castagna Sparkling Genesis,
