When will it rain?

Post by Craig(NZ) »

Just looking at some Auckland rain stats for where I live. Clevedon and Waiheke would be basically the same

2 months into the year in 2010 which is regarded as probably aucklands greatest ever vintage rain totalled 96 mls

2 months into the year in 2013 we are sitting on 29mls!

Touchwood!

A pretty well identical story in Hawkes Bay -- the Bridge Pa station (within a few kms of Gimblett Gravels) shows about 92 mls from 1 Jan - 3 March 2009 (arguably the greatest HB vintage to date) & 22 mls for the same period this year ...

I would have loved to share it with you.
Last weekend my shack on the Colo River (90kms NW of Sydney) was virtually wiped out, after the Colo River flooded to 14mt . It went from 1m to 14m in about 10 hours.
I still cant get there.

Just read Matakana has had the driest month ever since records began in 1966 and Auckland has had its second driest summer in 50 years. Forecast for next 10 days is for more of the same

5 minutes from Puriri Hills Vineyard, this is what the countryside looks like (hold the sheep jokes). Year to Date at Puriri Hills = 13mls of rain!

Doesn't look like the lush, green pastures typically presented in tourist brochures - and the sheep in the foreground looks like it needs crutching

First proper rain since the first 3 or 4 days of Jan here in Auckland today. We have got 11mls today so far, so I am guessing Puriri Hills/ Waiheke will be around about the same or a little less. Promise of a bit more of the next 2 days as well but it certainly wont be enough to derail a vintage

Drought is broken. I know Stonyridge completed vintage a few days ago. Haven't heard re Puriri Hills but I would imagine the same as merlot is king of the crop this year. Due to the last few days April is up to 48mm MTD. Stats below are from a Howick weather station which is <>10km away from both Clevedon and Waiheke wineries
