2010 Paringa Shiraz.

Post by bob parsons »

Paringa Estate, Mornington Peninsula.

Paringa Estate, located at Red Hill in the Mornington Peninsula, is a much feted label with an extraordinary track record of gold wine show medals, trophies and other accolades. Established in 1988 by schoolteacher Lindsay McCall with limited capital and resources the winery has since thrived with the reputation of making one of the finest Pinot Noirs in the country and an outstandingly beautiful Shiraz.

Thank you David for this write-up and you peaked my interest as I remember the Paringa Shiraz from a few years back and at the time felt worth buying more in the future. The agent at the time seemed to drop the line soon after but luckily the Shiraz has appeared back on the shelf. I understand the PN is one to look out for, also the sparkling Shiraz.

Tonite, I have just opened the 2010 Shiraz. SC, served slightly chilled, open one hour. $24 Cdn, 14% alc. Nice medium depth of color, nose is vibrant with blackberry and some currants, hint of grated spices.
Dry entry on the palate, integrated tannins, very good length. Not oak dominated, very berryish and good acidity. Not even close to a RP fruit bomb, plenty of restraint here. "Has some velvet tones" from across the table, went well with pork scallopini and linguini in a butter cream parmesan sauce.
Bravo!

Can you guys get Coldstream Hills Reserve Shiraz over there? I reckon you'd like that.

The only Coldstream Hills we get here in Edmonton is the Pinot Noir, and, if memory serves me right, only the regular Pinot, not the Reserve.

Bob, I've yet to see the Paringa Estate from Mornington Peninsula, only the Paringa from McLaren Vale.

There is a Paringa (i.e. not Paringa Estate) from McLaren Vale. I think it may be exported more than it is sold here (the only time I have seen it sold in Aus is from a wine retailer with dubious marketing techniques)

Michael, I wasn't thinking of Pertaringa which I have visited. The Paringa that I am thinking of is by one of the big cultish winemaker mainly for the export market. I bought into one of their earlier vintages when it first came out here, the '98 or '99 I think it was, when it was recommended to me.

Sorry Mahmoud. Didn't realise there was a Paringa in the Vale. I stand corrected. I knew there was Paringa Estate on Mornington Peninsula and Paringa Wines, which I think is a Riverland winery (bought some cheap shiraz from the latter through Grays a decade ago).

Cheers

Michael, no need to apologize. I think you are right about Paringa being a Riverland winery and I need to apologize about saying it was McLaren Vale. Perhaps the wine Bob was talking about was made from McLaren Vale fruit. Paringa is a David Hickenbotham wine and his family origin is from McLaren Vale where they have vineyards.

Cheers...............Mahmoud.
