Hmm,

Given that the only Australian wine regions with Icon status are MR and Coonawarra, shall we see if Victoria wide we can throw up some examples to challenge 'the best from the West'? ie Cabs and blends can come from anywhere in Vic, not just MP?

Happy with this? Prefer to restrict it to subsets of Vic. Ideas?

Vic-wide... Yarra Yering Dry Red No1 and Yeringberg, Sally's Paddock, Dalwhinnie, Coldstream Hills, Tahbilk all spring to mind.

Mount Mary Cabernets - superb elegant wine but would suffer against bigger extracted wines
Wild Duck Creek Alans Cabernets - would easily cope with the bigger wines

Yeah, agree we're not going to be able to come up with many Mornington Cabernet's.
Plenty from Yarra Valley, Pyrenees, etc.

I'll keep watching this thread to see what you decide.

Looking at my own cellar...despite the fact that I'd be kind of representing Victoria, since I live here, I have a much stronger representation of Margaret River wines ! Definitely no MP Cabernet(s) to speak of, and actually no MP Chardonnay either

Tahbilk could probably supply Eric Stevens Purbrick Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 and/or 2004 - or the standard or reserve cab from older vintages. The ESP 2002 I had earlier this year was excellent with still plenty of time on its side. Haven't had cabs from many other Vic regions such as Pyrenees, even Yarra Valley. It may be past it now but I really enjoyed Coldstream Hills Reserve Cab 2000 some years ago.

I agree with the suggestion to broaden the Victorian parameters to statewide. That was actually my intention for WA as well, although all of the wines I have selected are in fact Margaret River If I was bringing a dozen, I would definitely broaden the field.

BTW, the reason Mornington Peninsula became the focus is purely because that is where I was intending to spend the 4 days following Friday night. Plans have changed, unfortunately, and instead, it looks like a weekend around Goulburn (and Tahbilk especially), then back to work .

I look forward to meeting you all Friday night.

So its looking like we should bring a couple of bottles of interest, possibly from Margaret River or Mornington, maybe from the greater Victorian or WA regions but definitely no SA, TAS, NSW or QLD wines! Cabernet or Chardonnay predominant but not neccessarily.

Or imports..

Hell, just bring something we feel like drinking??

Let's make it mostly WA or VIC. I'd particularly encourage Vic Cab & blends if you have examples you adore because Vic is not renounded as a focal point for 'gun' Cabs/blends. Perhaps less need to bring "OK" cabs, as Cabs (WA naturally) are well represented in Allan's intended list (and my wine fridges here).

I suggest you email me directly - you all have my email, I think - with your preferred contributions, and I'll facilitate a bit of diversity, if that seems advisable.

If you get to Tahbilk (and haven't been there before) Allan, I hope you enjoy the experience. My sister and b-i-l love it, especially when there's good music being performed at the cafe. It's almost 12 years since my one and only brief visit but it remains an enjoyable, memorable experience even before the cafe was built.

I have booked accommodation within walking distance from Tahbilk (ironically, owned or managed by a Purbrick) and will be spending Saturday afternoon there. I will also visit Mitchelton and maybe one or two others on the way back to Tullamarine on Sunday.

It won't be the 'big wine trip' I envisaged, however, and will save Mornington for next time I am in Victoria (and have 3 or more days to explore).
