Excellent.. thanks for organising this Mark !

Hi Guys

The tentative line up is as follows:

Mark and Gail - 95 Duval Leroy Champagne
Ian - 1992 Irvine Grand Merlot
Paul + Jaz + Justin + John + Michelle
Mark Wickman
George Krashos
Jamie? - 98 Hubert de Montille Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru
Craig? - 90 E&E Black Pepper or 91 Aberfeldy
Chuck and SWMBO - 1996 Grant Burge Shadrach
Steve
Phill (Crusty2)? - 1988 Wynns John Riddoch or Sally's Paddock

It would be great if people could confirm whether they are coming, what wines they propose to bring and whether they are bringing friends/partners.

Cheers

Hi Mark,

I'm in even though I may be terrible company. I'm having my shoulder fixed on the 11th and will be able to get out and about by the 17th but I'll be sore and maybe even miserable.

Nevertheless I will make the effort because I'm heading overseas for anywhere from seven to twelve months in August and another fun dinner with the Auswine crew will be a great memory to take with me.

I've no idea what I'll take so far. I only have magnums of young riesling, so I'll have to go shopping to find some older and more awesome...

John and Michele are also in.

Now, considering some budget limitations, would the group prefer the 5 of us to bring:
2.5 magnums (well, that's 1 magnum per two people, and a bottle of something else for the remainder) between us, or:
pool our resources and bring one super-awesome magnum?

I don't mind either way!

Paul

As it looks like a few people will be bringing a magnum but not a partner, I am sure that we will have more than enough wine, so 2 magnums between 5 will be plenty. Althought if you happen upon a Grange or Hill of Grace I am sure no-one will begrudge one magnum between 5.

I should note that the proposed 'super-awesome' magnum would only be 'super-awesome' relative to what we could otherwise bring, and may not be 'super-awesome' compared to other magnums in general ;)

Anne and I are a 80% probability. Just have to shuffle a few things. Rethink on the wine given the quality of what's already listed. I'm looking at a 1996 Grant Burge Shadrach or 1990 Lindemans Sesquentenial Coonawarra Cabernet. I'll leave both in play and decide later depending on what else is being brought.

I'd suggest of those the 1996 Shadrach would be the pick - you've taken the Sesquicentennial to an offline already (upstairs at the Alehouse).

At the moment I'm thinking of taking a 1992 James Irvine Grand Merlot (the one judged the world’s best at the prestigeous 1997 International Merlot tasting in Switzerland directly against the likes of Petrus, Antinori, Modavi, etc), if that fails maybe the 1989 Peter Lehmann Cellar Collection Cabernet Malbec Merlot Shiraz that won the 1990 Stodart Trophy. I've also got a magnum of 1997 Brokenwood Semillon that might come along if we need a token white.

Phill (crusty2) mentioned to me the other night he might be able to make it, with either a 1988 Wynns John Riddoch or Sally's Paddock in mind (leaning towards the latter).

Cheers,
Ian

Hi All

The restaurant has supplied me with a menu which is set out below. If people have any dietary requirements which clash with the menu please call John Mack at Sah, 145 O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, Telephone 08 8267 5292 to discuss replacement dishes.

Shared Tapas Plates
First Course
• Crispy eggplant chips with mint and basil salsa verde
• Porcini mushroom infused arancini with garlic aioli

â—Š Second Course
• Grilled slices of house-made duck sausage with pickled onion
• Sautéed San Jose Chorizo with caramelised onion, sultanas & a Pedro Ximinez glaze

â—Š Main
Twice cooked lamb shank slow roasted with rosemary and thyme, with apple infused Mt Byron black lentils,
and a shiraz jus

â—Š Dessert
Fried house made fresh pasta ravioli stuffed with a banana and walnut fudge,
dusted with cinnamon sugar, and served with a peanut praline ice-cream and sauce anglais

The present list of confirmed and tentive attendees and their wines is as follows. As I will need to finalise numbers shortly, it would be great if people could confirm if they are coming, what wine they are bringing and if they are bringing friends/partners.

Mark and Gail - 95 Duval Leroy Champagne
Ian - 1992 Irvine Grand Merlot
Paul + Jaz + Justin + John + Michelle - 2002 Kabminye Schliebs Block + 2008 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz

Given that Jamie has unfortunately pulled out, and with him that lovely-sounding bottle of Burgundy, I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in pinot. I've got a 10+ year magnum of Bindi that very definitely needs drinking.

Otherwise, there are a few Rockford options - Home Block 96/97/98 or perhaps BP 96.

Or some Charles Melton options - Popes 99/01/02 or Barossa Shiraz 98/99 and a few others.

If anyone is interested in whites, I've got an 01 Petaluma Riesling that likely would do okay.

Let me know preferences and I'll let consensus rule.

Given the menu, the Bindi pinot would get my vote, followed closely by the 96 BP.

Agree that the Bindi Pinot would be at the top of my wish list. It's likely that Paul & Co will be taking a big-hitting Shiraz or two already, so the Bindi would certainly fill a niche now that Jamie can't make it.

Looking over the menu again, I'm beginning to think that we can do without any dry whites - the lighter red(s) should suit the Tapas courses. A sticky to finish might be handy though.

Cheers,
Ian

Hi All

In case you have not noticed the change to the topic heading, the restaurant booking has been made for 7pm. The address is 145 O'Connell Street North Adelaide. Please call me on 042 108 7778 if you have any last minute questions or are running very late.

If you arrive before me, just show the waiter John your magnum and he will know which table to direct you to.

Cheers

Thanks to Mark for a truly enjoyable evening. As I said on the night, I don't think I've been to an offline which had such consistently good wines (although that may be because I always bring the dud :P).

Highlights for me were the Champagne, the Bindi Pinot, the Irvine Merlot, and the Kalleske. WOTN a close call between the latter two wines, but by a whisker the Kalleske won it for me.

My thanks to Mark for putting this together, and to those who came along - it was a great selection of wines, but my headache the following morning at work wasn't so fun.

Guys,

After having to bail out late to be in Sydney on Thurs/Fri I know where I wanted to be. So some TN's please so I know what we missed. No sympathy for hangovers as it usually a good guide that the wines were pretty good.

The food looked awesome particularly the lamb shanks. Great winter comfort food. To partially make up Jamie Oliver's lamb shanks are on the menu tonight with a nice old big heavily wooded red. Gad I love winter!

For those that weren't there, there were a couple of tentative ideas/themes that were discussed for the next offline:

"Bring your bling" - major wine show trophy winners only.
"Home catered" - we might be able to get a chef (ex Enzo's) in to cook for us if someone has the space/room to suit.

There was also a bit of discussion as to why numbers were down for this one, specifically no-shows/no-replies from the usual offline regulars - was it because it was a weeknight, conflicts with other events, pricing, style of menu, etc? :?

Cheers,
Ian

Ian, really want to get to an offline, but after having lengthy discussions with Mark, I could not make it, Dentist bill worth a grange 6-pack...so even though $60 for dinner and an opportunity to look at some good wines....just bad timing.

We discussed the idea of having an offline actually off line or off premise if you like, at a neutral venue like someone's house. Unfortunately my place is not big enough for an event.
However, I think a really informal environment would be fantastic, I am thinking a gourmet barbie, lamb on the spit etc. which I think would attract the most sensational wines. perhaps a long lunch instead of a dinner at night
Anyway just my thoughts
Cheers
Craig.
Tomorrow will be a good day
