Adelaide Offline - Magnum Theme - at Sah - 17 May 7pm - $60

Post by Mark Jappe »

Dear All

I am thinking of organising an offline for Adelaide with all of the wines being in magnum.

I appreciate that this theme may not suit everyone's cellar, hence I am floating the idea without proposing a restaurant or date at this time. If there is sufficient interest in the theme, I will post these details later.

Of course, given them theme, we would drop the requirement from one bottle per person to one bottle per couple/pair of friends to avoid alcohol poisoning.

Please reply if you are interested.

Regards

Mark

Ah, we Grape Mates can identify with this, one bottle per person is the theory, it usually ends up doubled on the night...... "Hey, I bought this too, been wanting to open it with wine lovers for ages".... etc etc

Mark,

I can't do the Anzac Day weekend (Tasting Australia!) and nor can I do the first weekend in June and in late May I see a shoulder surgeon who's going to tell me to either deal with it or to tell me to have it fixed, so I may be out some random weekend after that, too.

Otherwise... I'm in like Flynn.

I don't have any magnum but only imperials. Can I still join? 8)

Only if you bring 11 friends :D

Seriously, one of the restrictions of the large format is it reduces the number of wines you get to try. On the upside, you get more of any wines you really like.

Given another interstate conference, I'd be delighted to rejoin the people I met at an Adelaide offline last year. However, current scheduling suggests 2013 :(
Melbourne and Gold Coast are my next travel locations for 2012.

Enjoy!

I'm interested. Nice to see we're attempting the Tom Selleck theme again - might be worth breaking out the cheeky Hawaiian shirt if it's not too cold. :P

Sounds like a good idea. There are a few larger bottles in the cellar looking for an excuse to be opened. There is a '96 Hasslegrove H Reserve Shiraz that should be just about right to drink however it's a double magnum. So I'm happy to take the leftovers (if any) home. Otherwise it will never be opened. Can also bring along SWMBO.

If I can make it I'll bring a Hubert de Montille Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru 1998. Quite an exceptional wine from 750ml format which led to my purchase of magnums. I'll have a back up as there's a slight leak- it's not heat affected as it just didn't cope with the flight to Oz.

Jamie

When are you in town? Your suggested wine inclines me to make a strong attempt to choose a date which suits your travel arrangements.

Given the theme, I would suggest that we need at least 12 confirmed starters (i.e. at least 6 different bottles) to make the tasting interesting. Once we have that number I will track down a suitable restaurant and set a date.

I will probably bring either a 1995 Duval Leroy champagne or a 1996 Pyrus.

Cheers

Mark

Hi, I might be brave enough to come to my first ever offline.
I have about 30 choices to choose from, but think a 90 E&E Black pepper or 91 Aberfeldy ?? or a YY underhill might hit the mark.

If the date is a goer, then could be a starter.
Cheers
Craig.

Dependent on date, I may be dragging John, Michele and Justin along as well as Jas, but due to finances I'm not sure exactly how many magnums we'll be bringing between us (I assume 2 between the five of us... if that's alright!!!).

If you can give us a date, I can firm that up.

Hi All

I am looking at Thursday the 10th of May with the venue to be Sah on O'Connell Street. I will post a menu and price shortly.

Please confirm whether this date suits.

Sorry Mark I just got your PM. I have to do a few cellar runs to Adelaide over the next 2 months. I have most of May and June off but I can't fit in on May the 10th. Sorry to be vague, I was just hoping to slot in on an offline with the ADL crew.

The 3rd of May is the other possibility. Does that suit any better?

I'd be happy to come along but 3/5 isn't ideal. The original date of 10/5 suits better but I'll wait and see what date you finalize.

It looks like both 10/5 and 3/5 have problems. I will look at some other dates and update soon.

Should work out OK for me - I did have a couple of other people interested, but they'll probably be put off by it being on a weeknight. To be honest I have some reservations too about trying to roll up to work after a magnum drinking binge...
Image Image Image

Speaking of which, what's the situation with glassware? With the big bottles we will certainly need more than one glass each, and I can do without the attitude I got from the staff at Cos who thought it was a big deal to get an additional one at the last offline. Along that train of thought, will we get a better deal from the venue if we agree to BYO glassware?

Cheers,
Ian

The restaurant has come up with a price of $60 including corkage for 4 courses. I will post details of the menu closer to the date.
As for glassware, the restaurant is happy to provide two glasses per head. Feel free to bring a spare or two if you want more than that.
