I scored two bottles of 1999 Penfold's 707 at $40 a bottle from an IGA in Queenscliffe (near Geelong) two weeks ago. I suspect the same lack of a "1".
Also w00t! These stories are few and far between, but damn satisfying regardless.

I will say it's been most gratifying to see the rapid deployment of the military into the region - looks like Australia learnt from Katrina. Purified water, emergency shelter and food supplies all look to be getting to those who need it, and in rapid order. I don't have too many kind words for the H...

Tried one last night too. Went in to VC to buy a bottle but they had it open for tasting. [...] Wasn't tempted to purchase even a single bottle. Here's another "me too". Tried it at VC Beecroft on Saturday and found it cloying and (as Jay60 put it) "industrialised". I don't mind one-dimensional (at...

E-Space walk-in cellars
Does anyone know anything about the ESPACE walk-in cellar unit? They look good on paper. Transtherm sell them ( http://www.transtherm.com.au ). The prices seem reasonable (as compared to the Vintecs). Apparently they are a complete package - room, shelves, cooling unit. (max) 900 bottles - $16000 ($...

Hi Allan Still playing, naturally, but only acoustic. The resolution of this cellar debate came down to the question "how long do we plan on staying at our current address?". This was unable to be firmly answered, but I suspect we'll leave the remote wilderness of Kenthurst in the next 2-3 years, so...

Oh wine gurus - what are the signs of brett? I wouldn't recognise it if it pitched one up at me at 160ks.

Paul - indeed I did, but then Xmas etc meant that I was remiss in my updating. Tasted some lovely stuff, mainly pinots Brief notes: Most curious award: Derwent Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 Will never hold a candle to a Coona CS, but interesting to taste a CS from such a cool climate. Tannins were ...

Your best bet is to plan a vacation up here, and tour the wine regions! Plans are already in the making - currently aiming for the end of the northern summer, and am planning to hit amazon for a decent guidebook. Thanks very much for the insight regarding local retailers, even if the news is bad, a...

Drinking American for beginners
OK - my 2006 resolution is to become less ignorant of the wines of the US of A. As I am TOTALLY ignorant currently, any advance on that is a step forward. My entire US wine experience consists of one bottle of Berenger Clear Lakes Zinfandel 1999, which didn't impress me much, although it improved af...

Drank a Beringer Clear Lakes Zinfandel 1999 last night... my first ever Zinfandel. Manning, At least your first one was red, not that horrid White Zinfandel rubbish Beringer trys to flog off as wine! Also purchased a few bottles of the Chook Block but I think I will lose them in the cellar for the ...

I've tasted about 1/4 of these and will leave the detailed notes to the experts, but I think you can rest assured you have been treated well - there are some truly excellent bottles in that list. I'll let the experts give their sage adivce, but I'll make a couple of comments. The 98 Meshach was a ve...

Greatest wine atrocity
My own personal benchmark of wine atrocity has always been Passion Pop, but that may have been supplanted yesterday by my discovery of "Sparkling wine in a can", complete with rip-top. (Artifically carbonated). Am planning to buy a can for a friend's birthday as a gag, and making her drink it, so wi...

OK, my absolute highlight was a Wirra Wirra Chook Block 02 . Mouthfeel was incredible, flavours peeled off from start to finish and a complete delight. Have 11 bottles left and will have extreme difficulty letting them age as they deserve. Watched Sideways again (great film) and decided that I need ...

Desperately need a wine cellar
OK, my collection is growing substantially, and the recent spate of 46 deg days (46C - that's 114F to our US colleagues) has convinced me that cellaring under the house is no longer a viable wine cellar option. Hence all purchasing has cessated until I do something about cellarage. The house sits on...
