Re: Real or Fake..

Can’t really tell from here how different these are. If you have ever read the enormous thread about Rudi on wineberserkers, then paper and font differences are give aways when it comes to fraud. Also, there was someone in Sydney who apparently bought millions of dollars worth of fakes, and who kno...

Bar Romanee in Yarraville.

Very good food - the main course Wagu was the best meat I have had in a while.
Awesome, I have heard good things. They let you bring bottles?

Re: TN: Montalto Chardonnay 2015

My final bottle tonight, just under a year after the last one. Fully developed now. Yellow bordering on gold in colour. Full stonefruit spectrum as well as some light grapefruit on the nose. Oak has retreated but still in the background. Palate is also full but not overly rich, and there's admirabl...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Many moons ago before Wynns was under the clutches of TWE there was a lot more autonomy with winemaking staff. I actually spoke to Sue Hodder asking if there was museum stock/back vintages available for sale. She said she would see what she could do and a return call offered a range of BLs from the...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Yeah - I think it happened on the Japan end, surprisingly. The bottle was in the centre of the case which had cardboard stuffed in about half of the empty slots - a last minute repack in BNE airport before check in. I opened the box expecting worse, and TBH was relieved to find it was just the one....

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Good to hear of everyone’s success. I think I was a bit more obsessive because of temperature. My wine would start in the tropics so I insulated heavily. Coming back from Australia I had a few litres of frozen organic milk to keep meat cool that was inbound to Honkers with a few bottles of great Au...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

I’m in ADL and repatriated last year. Bring back wines of longevity as you’ll treasure treating yourselves to them on occasion. That’s what I’ve found anyways. My palate hasn’t localised at all. This more to the quaffing spectrum where local wines dreary and too heavy when you just want a few glass...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Moving fine wine and being an industry insider my biggest concern was temperature. You can fry an egg on a tarmac, then your bag may end up going from 60 degrees on the tarmac to a sometimes very cold cargo compartment. So if you insulate for these extreme temperatures you’ve probably covered yours...

Get cracking 👍 My best individual effort about 80 bottles. 15 to 20K of Barolo at In Bond pricing. Being the height of the irrational COVID fear, nobody in Customs would process me. Sweeter through, was Dan’s hotel quarantine program didn’t allow alcohol other than that bought off the expensive hot...

Re: Henschke Bottle Quality... thoughts?

Makes me think I am extremely lucky to never have had a broken bottle in my suitcases over the years. I usually don't bother with bubble wrap, just cover the bottles inside clothes within a hard cased luggage. A few bottles is pretty easy to protect. I move two suitcases per trip, 12 bottles in eac...

Re: Xmas wines and Happy Holidays to everyone

Ooh - if on song, that could very much be a treat! I have only one Pio Cesare in the cellar, a 1974 Barbera d'Alba. Now logically it's daft to have a Barbera that old and to hope it's anything but shot. However on finding it in the cellar of a wine shop in Torino, the colour looked remarkably healt...

I visited Maha East (Chapel Street, Windsor end) this week and the corkage was $25bl of which I am more than happy to pay. The food was outstanding, the ambience excellent. Stemware was decent too. Good spot if one is partial to modern Turkish style cuisine.

Re: Old Australians From Climate Controlled Storage.

What a pity about the Vat 9. I’ll dig one of mine out. My cellar was organised into regions once upon a time- now it’s chaos. An Italian invasion occurred and many wines buried under boxes upon boxes of Piedmont beauties. Manzone I’ve extensive exposure to including staying with them. Before COVID ...

Dinner last night at Scopri. The food was excellent and the wines all very good and we had a rare situation whereby there was a complete lack of consensus on which bottle was wine of the night, my choice was the Manzone Barolo Castelleto of which was shining after a 6 hour decant..the Tyrrell's Vat ...

A great selection and some very clearly generous offerings, though I reckon the next challenge might need to be Italy outside of Piemonte/Toscana  Harder to source for sure, but plenty of gems from the other regions of Italy as well as in these two giants of Italian wine. Very astute observati...

This thread has indeed gone quiet! Thanks for the revival. Had the pleasure of tasting Gaggan Anands cuisine at his popup in Singapore and whilst we started the 9 courses with a lovely Meursault, it was the Nervi Gattinara that blew me away. The balance between power and elegance it quite breathtaki...

I honestly don’t think we give old Aussie’s the respect they deserve.

Boom. Agree. Moss Wood 1985 on Friday outshone a Biondi Santi.

Re: Best New Zealand Chardonnays

Marvelous thread idea! Always love a good pointer.

I agree the Kumeu River Hunting Hill is the pick, more restrained and has that lovely sea salt quality to it, superior wine to the Mates Vineyard though many may disagree here.

Others that spring to mind are Pegasus Bay as well as Dry River.

Likewise - more Coonawarra from back in the heyday. Petaluma used to have quite the reputation, but had fallen off the radar somewhat. May be time to revisit. Simon Simon, I have found 2010/12 to be very good. Its a point of difference with the small amount of Merlot in the blend to all the straigh...
