Re: Need Advice on New Storage and Stelvin Implications
If you mostly store Stelvin and drink within 10 years, and are confident of max 23 degrees, I think all good.
Presuming they are Aussie wines mostly - gutfeel that they are more durable than old world, especially combined with Stelvin.

Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon top for me, followed by Tyrrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz.

Re: What are the most ridiculously over-priced wines in the world?
2022 Ch. Lafite @ $1500 per bottle LUC ( and still in wood ) - still to have re-sellers margin and GST to be added. Have to disagree with this one - probably the most famous Bordeaux, with an enormous track record. In demand in probably every country with wine drinkers. Well-affordable to the rich,...

Re: What are the most ridiculously over-priced wines in the world?
I’m amazed at how some of the Burg producers have shot up in price. Used to pick up Bizot at auction a few years ago for cheap, recall the labels looked like they had been printed on a home inkjet printer! Checking my records, bought bottles of Vosne-Romanee from auction for $34.50 back in 2009. 201...

Re: Aged St Henri and Yattarna
Would pass on the Yattarna even with perfect storage.
The St Henri, is dependent on price and storage conditions. If it is just in a garage/cupboard/under the house, pass. If storage appears to have been reasonable and price isn’t too high, worth a try.

…2021 Yarra Yering Dry Red No1. I was given advice from a wine e-tailer that because of the very high scores from a couple of wine reviewers there may be none left for retail distribution when released in a years time. Will be interesting to see if this happens. Seems like there is a lot of Yarra Y...

Re: Ageing Potential for Screwcap in average storage
Sydney is fairly warm, the boxes will slow the rate of temperature change but the temperatures will stay fairly warm (compared with conventional wisdom). Australian Cabernet and Shiraz wines are pretty hardy, and given the reduction of oxygen ingress risks from an expanding and contracting cork, I t...

That said, with all the horror stories I've read about Vintecs, and some of the more recent stuff I've seen on Liebherr, I think I may just bite the bullet and splash out on Eurocaves.... Are Eurocave that much better? Only 2 years warranty, so it is no better than all the other common brands. Euro...

Re: POLL: What temperature is your wine fridge or cellar set to?
Fridge for white wine: 10 degrees Fridge for red wine: 15 degrees These fridges are for near term consumption, so I want the wines to be at drinking temperature, or can warm up to it. Offsite cellar is probably 16-18 degrees - not optimal according to received wisdom, but it’s the best I can do in t...

Still got unopened boxes of 90’s Mt Edelstone. Think I’ll leave to posterity. No use auctioning then off they don’t get the price they deserve ( perfect cellaring ) Why not sell at Wickman’s, he will place a note on the auction lot that the wine has been professionally cellared since release if you...

This diammonium phosphate stuff...is this mainly used by industrial wineries, or is it used also by the small producers?
This is the first time I've heard of DAP. The wine industry is very good at keeping secret all the additives they put into wines.

It's a bit like the retail game...retailers have to buy a Piedmont importer's meh wines like Barbera in order to get the cru Barolo. First off, I don't consider Barbera to be a "meh" wine. Secondly, a good Barolo producer likely makes a good Barbera as well. And don't forget, some of the ...

On the Shiraz blends the flippers must make fly-buy points only? $57 a bottle with delivery break even nearly $70 at auction to cover commissions. Not much in it? The logic is that most people only want the shiraz, however an order for only shiraz is unlikely to be successful. So people order all t...

It's unrealistic to expect modern Black Label Cab to be as good or better than the past (despite what some of the professionals may say). 1. Within Wynns - many labels above Black Label will take preference for the good grapes. 2. Within Treasury - Penfolds is likely to take more of the top grapes n...

Penfolds Bin 28 - had a cheap burnt oak taste to it across the few vintages I've tried. High alcohol bombs like Noon, Wild Duck Creek, etc. Gloopy, soupy and hard work, and so not food-friendly. Barbera - mostly tastes like generic Italian red table wine to me, don't see much point in these for $30+...

Penfolds should ship the wine to China in large bladders. Then bottle it in China. Tariff avoided.Alex F wrote:Surely the solution is to sell double magnums or something.

Don't understand all the gnashing of teeth here. Just buy them on Langtons when they appear, they're still pretty affordable in the grand scheme of things. Or just go buy some other well-made McLaren Vale shiraz, there's oceans of it out there. It's all just new release hype, don't fall for the FOMO.

Oh, and by the way, Polymer is absolutely 100% right. Australia has been technically "dumping'" it's wine for many years, and the Chinese are on extremely solid legal ground on this one. Simon Birmingham knows it. Care to explain how a specific wine company with a branded good can dump? W...
