Thanks all. In the end time and availability got away from me, so I went for a Dead Arm, Schild Estate Barossa GSM and Ten Minutes by Tractor 10X Pinot.

I shall report back on my Gallic friend's contribution to the debate.

Australia vs France - Terror or Terrior?

Team, I'm off to Provence on the weekend, and am being hosted by a bloke in the Wine trade. Good-natured challenges along the lines of 'Our Reds vs Yours' have been issued by the Old World party and so I have to provide one Australian Northern Rhone style, one Southern Rhone style and one Burgundy t...

And therein is one of the attractions of wine - you say tomato and I say tomarto. I thought the Dr L was straying too far to the sweet for sweetness sake, however I must admit that my Riesling tastes do stray towards the dry, and put me in a frame of mind for South Aussie Oysters.

In the beginning (kind of)... Barossa Perle for bringing wine to the masses, and making middle Australia aware that there is more to it than port and sherry. The 70's and 80's were about more than One Day Cricket... Anything in a goonskin for simply letting Mum and Dad have a glass or two with dinne...

At the recent Australia Day Tastings here in the UK, we poured quite a few bottles of Sparkling Red. Many people were very curious to try what the typical UK consumer thinks of as quite a novelty, despite our explanation that Sparkling red is quite normal back in Oz. In general people wanted to know...

2006 Jean-Luc Colombo 'Les Gravieres' Crozes Hermitage - pepper and spice and all things nice, this one. At the price point, you're never really sure what you're going to get from our Gallic friends, but this one was an 'honest', medium bodied red with all the fruit, structure and length just where...

Screwcap bottles upright is A-OK. Unlike cork, there is no need to keep the closure most.

For what it's worth, the company I work for - which represents a fair chunk of Australia's domestic and international wine business - is looking to move to screwcap on everything (subject to each particular distributing market's acceptance of such closures). Takes a bit more time to make the move on...

I think part of the solution rests within the consumers themselves. There is a school of thought that says these consumers will evolve to adopt and display somewhat more traditional tastes and behaviours within established categories, but the real rock and roll of trend and weird behaviour will occu...

Had it last night. I've had the 2005, but don't remember mutch about it. The 2006 was quite tight and restrained at first, dark fruits and a bit figgy but over the course of dinner it opened up in to quite an elegent big red (if that makes sense). At the 'about town' shelf price, quite good value I ...

Given some of these prices: m I would suggest that there are some very 'thrilled' wine collectors out there. Wayno, your commments as a 'collecotr' are well made, but I was thinking - If I was a 'collector' of cars, I would want the best car (best = subjective 'beauty', performance, accessiblity, cu...

Given the 'thrill' that consumers experience from knowing that they are drinking an expensive bottle of wine, and taking Wayno's comments in to account, from now on I intend to serve all my dinner party wines in brown paper bags, and tell eveyone that they range in price from $50 to $137. Decanting, I'm certain. The decanter being a wine vessel, decantering would be more like the act of making a decanter or behaving like a decanter, or otherwise engaging in some type of decanter-like activity. $10 per person or $20 per bottle max, by the way. And I want nice glasses for that, too. Ot...

Great concept, Craig! Best Red: 2005 Kellermeister Temparanillo (the wine was great, but to be fair it also had a lot to do with time and place) Best White: 1997 Richmond Grove Barossa Riesling, consumed in the company of John Vickery (NB - I have a commercial interest in this wine) Best value: 2005...

Limbering up for Sunday's gala cheese event with a light lunch at The Victory. When I say light lunch, of course I mean an extensive lunch and a bottle or two from their excellent cellar before a roll down the hill and in to McLaren Vale town.
