WineWeek's 100th episode: The 4 best Aussie wines.

Just a little bit to kick off some discussion of your own, but over at WineWeek.com.au we're reached our 100th episode. So instead of our usual "$30 and under" self imposed guidelines, we decided to do something a bit different to celebrate the milestone. The four best Aussie wines. The ta...

We do look mostly at mid-to-lower end (priced) wine. There's not much point in us reviewing Grange, Hill of Grace or d'Yquem... there are lots of guys and girls reviewing that end of the market who are better qualified (and probably better with their palates) than us. Our "best" was in par...

Goodness. I hope Greys paid you for that else it looks like a fine case of blogsploitation...anyway.. the 99 Gartner is a lovely wine. Always was. Records show buying 6 in July 2002 for 24.99 from Auswine I do believe. It has regularily sold on Langtons for about $11 which is a great bargain. GW No...

If I may, how much is the Two Hands fee? I want to let my friends know in advance to make sure they're ok with it.

Don't remember exactly... either $3 or $5.

Torbreck is a must, and if you're heading that way, drop by Two Hands as well - they have a tasting fee, but if you're trying to impress Two hands do some mighty fine wine.

The $189 + 15% for a single bottle of 2000 Torbreck 'The Steading' isn't too clever either!

I went along to the tasting night in Melbourne on Wednesday. Not a lot of wine that I thought was particularly impressive. Did get to catch up with Max Allen, which was good, an I think he was of a similar feeling... But.. there are a couple I thought were pretty reasonable... So we did this week's ...

Really like the Torbreck Saignee, although it's difficult to get hold of. The newest vintage is supposed to be released this month as I understand. It's as dry as dry can be... very different from the (below) average lolly water Rosé drops.

As most have pointed out the Two Hands Brilliant Disguise is top quality. I liked the Wirra Wirra which I tried only a few weeks ago (which is also the smaller 500ml bottle like the Two Hands) I've also been reasonably impressed with the bianco De Bortoli offering as well. Nicely off-dry with a dece...

I saw these at Henschke's the other week. Very interesting, wonder what extra cost they add to a bottle. They seem to seal very well also. The people at Henschke that I've spoken to suggest that it's roughly au $1 per closure... which is very similar to what they are currently paying for top range ...

Glass cork (vino-lok) featured on my podcast

Normally I don't want to clutter up this forum by self-promoting... but this week I thought people might want to have a heads up on our current episode. The reason being that we look (with close ups) at the cellar door/mailing list Henry's Seven from Henschke which uses the 'glass cork' (or more cor...

As far as places to eat I would thoroughly recommend the Sevenhill Hotel. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is a great pub with absolutely top notch meals. The cellar is a little on the light side at the moment (I understand the place is up for sale). But they will do BYO at $10 cor...

Re: Screwcaps and Grange

I hadn't heard Grange, but had heard the Hill Of Grace is headed that way. I believe Henschke are going glass stoppers at the premium end, adds about $1 bottle to costs. This is the closure you're thinking of. http://www.vino-lok.de/inhalt.htm#eng It appears on cellar door Henry's Seven's at the mo...

I was really disappointed to find a tasting fee at 10 x Tractor when I visited it this easter. Although only $3 (not the $5 of many instituting this), I thought it a bit rich when considering that their two best (or at least most expensive) wines were 'sold out' and so unavailable for tasting. To ch...

For a 'regular drop' I'd consider the Vasse Felix as an option, a very nice 04 Cab Sauv. with some nice oak behind the blackcurrent.

To continue the analogy I would rate the 04 Penley Phoenix as "excellent" - ie a step under "mint" and "near mint". And personally certainly the equal of the Majella in almost every regard, and better than it in terms of value for money. It's good to have some basis fo...
