Re: 2016 Yarra vintage

Good whites, pass on the reds. Realistically, there wouldn’t be too many that would have released a red in 2009. It was a funny stage, as the wine industry as a whole was really learning about the impact of smoke taint. I think down the track with our knowledge we might have done it differently. At ...

2016 Yarra vintage

Hi Guys, I think it’s wrong to assume that certain vintages are a disaster for all wineries. In 2011, we made the best whites we have ever made and will live for 20 years. To say that all vineyards had mildew is not really a correct statement. 2016 was tough, but certain blocks did really well. We h...

Re: Melbourne Offline - Fri June 19 - Seats Still Available!

Hi gents,

Just confirming,

7pm start?
Are we serving the wines blind?

Look forward to seeing everyone. I've got a pinot and I'll also bring a back up which no doubt we will open.
See everyone tomorrow night.

Cheers

Re: Weekly Drinking Thread Commencing 17th November

Hi Rossco, Glad you liked it. Spot on, it's unfiltered and unfined. Needs time to evolve but has everything there. Line and length, structure. Really happy with how it has come along and will be good for 5-7 years. I'm not filtering any of my reds anymore, wines are clean so can't see the point. Wit...

Re: 2010 Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay

Hi Sean, glad you liked it. It's about 75% where it should be post bottling but coming along nicely. Nice and tight, but with real flavour. The '10 vintage in the Yarra was a kind one and the wines really made themselves. This is offically released on the 1st of May, but a small amount has gone out ...

Re: Hoddles Creek 1er chardonnay 09

Actually had a bottle of this over two nights. My suggestion is don't serve it too cold, almost ambient temp. are best. Drink it over three nights, the second and third nights just give it enough time to breathe. The thing with this wine is it should age for quite a long time as it has a nice line o...

Thanks guys it was a great night.

Must say I thought the food was great, hit the spot and really cheap.

To me the stand outs where the Noble One, both the Chablis and Chambolle.
Cheers and thank you to Ian for organizing it.

Re: Adelaide Informal Offline July 2-6

Ok, I know Seven doesn't really want to go to T-Chow. I have an offline group and we would go to Chinese every second offline. Works well if there isn't a lot of spice (which we can request at ordering) But I'm willing to try T-Chow as it fits in with most people's budget. Lets confirm numbers for F...

Re: Adelaide Informal Offline July 2-6

I'm the same, don't think we need to spend a fortune to have a good night. Even if we pick a reasonable restaurant with low corkage and split the bill between us. I'm even happy to get a bucket of KFC with great wines! Casual and inexpensive would be great. Think it doesn't really matter where we go...

Re: Hoddles Creek in The Australian

Hi Allan, Whites aren't really affected by smoke. In years like '07 and '09 for whites we tend to whole bunch press them, rather than break up the skin with crushing/destemming/pressing. This is too get the juice out of the skins as quickly as possible. Obviously with reds, you have to ferment on sk...

Re: Hoddles Creek in The Australian

Thanks Michael, been a great weekend. I think he was really taken back with how the wines age, especially the Chardonnay. All the whites going back to '03 still had years ahead of it. He didn't focus on any current release Pinot Noir's as there aren't any. In '09 there is no Hoddles or Wickhams. Rea...

Re: Adelaide Informal Offline July 2-6

I thought a Hoddles would have been an automatic. I remember at the vertical at the Manse last year you said you had all sorts of fun with the car on the way down - better make sure it's serviced and 100% before the trip this time. Are you staying in the CBD or out in the burbs? Might slip one Hodd...

Friday night is good, unless I have car troubles :?

Burgundy theme is also great, as long as I dont have to bring Hoddles!

I'm not too sure where to go in Adelaide so up for suggestions. I'm happy to fit in with everyone's price range.

Re: Weekend Drinkies... April 17/18

On a mini-Hoddles Creek vertical this weekend - I decided to back up the 06 Chardonnay from Friday night with an 07 Chardonnay last night. Not discernably different from the 06 - both pretty youthful, although more lemon and juiciness in the younger wine. Both show enormous class for their relative...

Re: Schoolday Drinks- Mar 8th to 12th

Hi Michael, glad you liked the pinot noir. I chose not to filter it after I filtered a trial batch and it stripped it completley. With 08 being such a light delicate year, it was worth not filtering it. I really wanted to present the wine in a state where it would look its best (not looks though!), ...

G'day Franco. I was just wondering if you could tell me a bit about bottle shock... I'm not really sure what it is and how it manifests... Thanks! Tim Hi Tim, I find it quite hard to explain it. Some years the Chardonnay will go thru bottle shock, whilst the Pinot Noir won't, whilst others are visa...

Re: Schoolday Drinks- Mar 8th to 12th

Hi Guys, the 07 Pinot Noir was a combination of frosted fruit and a small parcel of smoke affected fruit (15%). I had to put that small parcel in to give it some richness that the frosted fruit didn't have. We have continually shown this wine at wine dinners, and looks very good. It has such a low l...
