In a way the environmental argument against aluminium based seal isnt too bad. Bauxite is strip mined in the north od australia under favourable goverment conditions. Transported to plant 1000s of Ks away (Weipa to Portland) where it is refined with energy provided from the Latrobe Valley coal fired...

Re: Aussie producer bemoans bulk wine "dealers"

This is really the ultimate problem fo rthe publicly owned wine producers The business head wants increased volumes, increased margins, broader price points, marketable brands. The wine makers want to produce bloody good wine. The winemakers build a reputation the business gradually gut that reputat...

Re: Review of the Royal Mail Dunkeld

Hmmm, Although the wines matched to the food look great, $190 per person seems a little steep for this. For that, you could have got a couple of really nice bottles off the list. What do others reckon? Cheers, Monghead. In a way I agree with you Mong. If I was a local it might be a different story ...

Re: Review of the Royal Mail Dunkeld

I havent added it up and dont want to but it would be the $800 odd meal (first night) plus accom plus breakfast plus fuel plus being weak and going back the second night.

Strangely I havent been hungry since and I have lost all urge to cook.

The Royal Mail part II

Yellowfin Tuna, onions ,nori, garlic 2006 Craggy Range 'Beaux Cailloux' Chardonnay Hawkes Bay NZ Sounds simple enough but I couldnt find the nori or taste the garlic. Chef has this ability to transform items, extract a character or flavour, insert another, whilst keeping a wonderful synergy in the c...

Review of the Royal Mail Dunkeld

Well we had heard about the Royal Mail Hotel for a number of years now and as a surprise the good wife (now elevated to great wife) booked us in for the degustation. She had off loaded the kids for the weekend and had us set up for two nights in Dunkeld with a little walking in between to burn off a...

Companies are charging you for the priviledge of saving the planet but no companies are actually saving the planet.

I cant believe they would do that to me

I guess the pointing and grading of wine assumes the drinker will be expereinceing the wine in a certain environment, thus is not accurate for real world. We dont sit donw in the evening and compare a draft of 15 wines to each other, well most of us dont. Most of us prepare a meal, cruise the forums...

I worked with a bloke who forgot he had some wines saved at his mums place. Knew I was into wine so brought one of his dozen DArrys from the mid seventies. Weel preserved fully developed and only lightly bricked. It was techinically past the window but was still a magnificently developed wine. I sai...

When I read reviews these days, I look for new labels new regions, new styles. I realised long ago that points and single wine reviews are nothing more than curios. they mean virtually nothing to my drinking experience. If anythingI prefer them after Ive drunk the wine to gain further perspective, b...

You cant back any of them in my opinion. For a start are you talking about thier latest column or thier latest encyclopeadia. I was in this game for a while and I think if you want to charge 50 shekels go for it but provide the appropriate level of service. lets assume you are a true fine dining establishment. At that price I would advertise BYO by appointment, where you can discuss the type of wine being delivered, how it...

Was a wine waiter about 20 years ago before it was trendy to have Sommeliers. Had some questions for the ASA a few years ago about what Sommeliers earnt etc, they were less than helpful.
