I was asked to taste some wine from a producer I had never heard of before. Two wines from the Wandering Piano stable in Marlborough N.Z.

If anyone can give me some background info on the winery, winemaker etc. that would be fan-bloody-tastic. Any way here is what I thought......

06 Sauvignon Blanc
Typical colour for a savvy with some light green tints coming from the glass. The nose is pungent with sweet stewed apples and gooseberries being dominant. Layered beneath that is the typical Marlborough asparagus tones, not overt but noticeable.
The wine is well balanced with excellent weight for a savvy. It would not surprise me if aportion of the wine had seen secondary barrell ferment, due to its oily, lingering mouthfill. Elegant passionfriut, pineapple and grapefruit flavours combine to fill out a well structured wine that is balanced with soft but lengthy acidity. Its like bitting into a ripe sweet juicy pineapple.

06 Pinot Noir
Pouring this into the glass, I thought geez this has seen some masceration. Dense, blood red in colour with crimson hues. I could smell it from four feet. The opulent nose displaying spicy plums, sour cherries over the top of cassis and spatterings of spicy oak.
Excellent balance on the palate with nice use of oak combining for a well weighted wine. Elegant flavours of sour cherries and blackcurrants are noticeable at first, whilst the mid and back palate is dominated by unripe blackberries, that remain in your mouth for quite some time.

Overall I thought that both wines were well crafted, with excellent depth. Anyone else tried the wines? What do you think?
