Marchand & Burch 2022 Burgundy Collection

Post by Waiters Friend »

G'day

I had the pleasure of attending a comprehensive tasting of a selection of the Marchand & Burch 2022 Burgundy releases. Hosted by the incredibly knowledgeable (and modest) David Stredwick, we were guided through 11 wines with detailed commentary on the winemaking, geography, and a little history on the side. David is a passionate presenter, with some of his presentation based on personal experience, and his enthusiasm for Burgundy shows through in spades.

We started off with two whites:

Marchand & Burch 2022 Chablis: This wine sees no oak. Medium yellow in colour. The nose is quite saline, with oyster shell, peaches and nectarine. A faint touch of citrus. The palate is quite mouth filling, with stone fruits, salted lemon, and cleansing acid. Good length.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Savigny Les Beaunes Les Vergelesses: From 33 years old vines. The wine sees 25% new oak and is pressed directly to barrel for a wild yeast fermentation. No battonage. Moderate yellow colour. Stone fruits and modest amount of citrus on the nose. There’s more peach and nectarine on the palate, with moderate acid. The texture is interesting – there’s a slight oak derived tannic grip, and a texture somewhere between glycerol and river pebbles. The wine got better in the glass over 30 minutes or so.

We then followed with 9 reds, almost all of which were 100% Pinot Noir. As you would imagine, we moved from Bourgogne to Village to Premier Cru.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Bourgogne Rouge: This includes 30% Gamay in the blend and sees no oak. The nose is medicinal, with sour cherries, raspberries and iodine. Reminds me of cough syrup. The palate is modest in intensity, even a little thin, finishes short. Not my style of wine, I’m afraid, and this was the second time I have tasted it.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Marsannay: 35% whole bunch in the ferment, and the wine sees 10% new oak. Crimson colour. A perfumed nose of bright red cherries, rose petals and red fruit compote. The palate is light bodied, with a slightly savoury note, and the fruits emerged more after time in the glass. Light tannins, supporting acid, a silky texture and good length.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Cotes De Nuits: 10% whole bunch and 15% new oak. Crimson/ruby in colour. Also a perfumed nose, with light spice, raspberries, and bright red cherries. The palate is slightly stalky, and a little bigger than the Marsannay. Light tannins and good acid, and the fruits flow through the palate to a medium finish.
Then onto the Village wines:

Marchand & Burch 2022 Chambolle-Musigny. Only 3 barrels were made, and none of the barrels were new. 60% whole bunches. Purple/red in colour and translucent. Aromatic nose, bright red cherries, strawberries and a dusting of spices.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Vosne Romanee: 12 barrels made of this wine, with 30% of them new (please don’t do the arithmetic!). 100% de-stemmed. Deep crimson in colour. A combination of lifted aromatics and dark cherries on the nose. A full and powerful palate, with moderate tannic grip, clean supporting acid, and excellent length.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Nuits St Georges: 20% new oak. Deep crimson in colour. An initially savoury nose, with less obvious fruit initially. Some raspberry and perfumed notes emerged over time in the glass. The red fruits were more apparent on the palate, which is well structured. There’s fine but drying tannins, juicy acid, and a lingering finish.

Finally, the Premier Crus:

Marchand & Burch 2022 Savigny Les Beaunes Les Lavieres 1er Cru: From 71-year-old vines. 100% de-stemmed, and 25% new oak. Deep crimson/purple in colour. A stalky and perfumed nose, with a little spice alongside the bright red fruits. Tannins are fine and slightly drying; acid is complementary, and the wine shows moderate length.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Beaune Clos Du Roi 1er Cru: My favourite wine of the tasting, by a small margin. 30% new oak, and 10% whole bunch. A slightly stalky nose, with quite concentrated dark berries, cranberry and raspberry. The palate is quite full and rich, with dark fruits, some viscosity and a long finish.

Marchand & Burch 2022 Volnay Premiets 1er Cru: From 61-year-old vines. 20% whole bunch and 30% new oak. Deep crimson in colour. The nose was in someways difficult to describe -savouriness and fruits meshed in a nervy way. Tannins were modest, but seemed to increase towards the back palate. In fact, all of the wine was modest up front but quite powerful from mid through to back palate, and very interesting as a result.

If these wines are examples of what Burgundy 2022 can produce, then it’s looking pretty good after the difficult 2021 vintage. (We have not seen any 2021 Marchand & Burch wines). As usual, I have spent more than I intended at a Marchand & Burch tasting, which has become the norm – I need to change my expectations.

Many thanks to David and Beth for a highly informative and smoothly operated event.

Cheers
Allan

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.

Be lovely to know the prices - or the retail ones at least.
This is always where the whole Burgundy train comes off the rails, at least in my experience!

Hi Graeme - some of the wines are already up on their website: https://burchfamilywines.com.au/prod-brand/marchand-burch/. Look for the 2022s of course. Member prices slightly cheaper.
