Wickman’s Wine Auction Closure

Post by JamieAdelaide »

Very disappointed to see this local SA auction house shutting its doors. I was never a secondary market buyer until I got involved with Wickman’s as I valued their provenance assessment. Only one dishonest vendor put up a cooked wine claiming perfect provenance over 1000’s of purchases.

More importantly, I hope Mark can return to good health.

Wow, I hadn't heard this news. Very sad to hear.

Agree, Jamie, I valued his provenance checks too.

I have bought some magnificent wines through him. Also sold a lot too, a brilliant service.

Not a surprise to me. I have bought a few gems, but the volume of wines for sale per month seems to be rather low and the selection seems to have become a bit less interesting. A real shame as I like the detail that Mark put into the descriptions.
This is my church, this is where I heal my hurts.

Although for obvious geographical reasons I never used their services, it's clear they did so much very well, and that was recognised in this forum and another I used to post on.

Hoping Mark can regain his health.

It is going in to a hiatus due to Mark''s ill health, not so much due to business pressures.

We have unfortunately had to postpone the start date of our auction as we were advised not to go live with the new site and auction at the same time by our developers. The website should be changing over the next day or two with the auction set to start a few days later according to the latest information given to me. Once we have more information we will be in touch.

We really appreciate your patience while we get this new chapter of Wickman's up and running.

Received an email today...feels like a bit of a soft launch, small auction 500 listings.
Guess if I have a look round, I will be able to find details on freight/commissions and so forth.
Cheers Craig

Glad to hear that Mark's health is likely improving

Last week I opened a bottle I bought from him, a Seppelt Para Liqueur Port, Bottling No. 114, that was bottled in 1990. It was excellent.

Sadly Mark passed away last Wednesday after a battle with cancer.

He was a lovely man who will be sorely missed by many in the wine community.

No funeral details, family only.

Yes very sad indeed Roger.
Cancer is sharply in focus for me at the moment with a partner 9 months into the journey. I'm quickly realising what is important and what's a complete time waster.

Sincere condolences to Mark's family

JamieAdelaide let me know the day before that Mark didn't have long... it doesn't make this any easier now.

It all comes flooding back... my first Auswine in-person experience meeting Mark, Gavin Trott, yourself and Steve at Gavin's place nearly 21 years ago. The real start of my Auswine connection, and my more serious wine journey. As well as your now legendary (as Mark put it) wine in a sock.

Mark was as you say a lovely man and Gentleman, always positive... but willing to take a stand too. He was a pioneer with his auction site to actually publish bottle provenance, one of the first to have images of bottles at auction. But he also had the most reasonable commissions.

Vale Mark, deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I like many will miss the sense of fun and mischief he added to any occasion, as well as his vast wine knowledge and impeccable character.
Forget about goodness and mercy, they're gone.

Sad to hear of Mark’s passing, from a distance it seemed to be sudden in the end. I never had the occasion to meet him, but did buy a few bottles from him over the years. Condolences to the family.

Although I never knew Mark personally that is very sad news, my condolences go to his family and friends in this very difficult moment.
