Good Food & Wine Show

Post by Aaron Lovett »

Spent a few hours at the Good Food & Wine Show in Perth yesterday. Here are my impressions:

Brookland Valley- didn't try all their wines but the 2008 Estate Chardonnay was very impressive. Laser sharp acidity matched with some fine oak, and quality Margaret River fruit. These guys seem to be ramping up the quality.

Peter Lehmann- Really good wines across the board. 2004 Mentor really shows how good cabernet can be from the Barossa, and a real bargain to boot. 2006 Futures Shiraz also a full on shiraz experience, and great bang for your buck experience. Also the 2004 Eight Songs and 2004 Stonewell really outlining not only the strength of the vintage, but also great wines at each price point. The only downside was that I wasn't impressed with the 2001 Black Queen Sparkling Shiraz as it lacked depth. Hopefully there will be a replacement vintage soon.

MurrayStreet Vineyards- Another Barossa winery outlining the strength of the 2006 vintage. 2006 Gomersal being the pick of the bunch for me ahead of the 2006 Shiraz and 2006 Sophia. Unfortunately the 2006 Greenock was not on tasting.

Hentley Farm- For mine, these were the wines of the day. 2006 The Beauty, and 2006 The Beast were so richly concentrated. Not sure how would go drinking more than one glass, but a truly hedonistic experience.

Majella- Was hoping to try the 2007 Cabernet, but as it is in such short supply, it wasn't on tasting. I am assured that there is only a trickle left at the winery, but would have been nice to taste before purchasing.

Xabregas- I'm a bit of a fan of this winery, although you will have to like a bit of tannin to get into their Show Reserve Range. Both the 2007 Show Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2007 Show Reserve Shiraz have excellent fruit depth from a remarkably good vintage, but you may need to wait for that wall of tannin to subside more.

Also good to plonk yourself in front of the truffle stand and try some of the yummy truffle products, like the truffle honey, and truffle hazelnuts in honey. I'm looking forward to next years instalment already :D

Great notes, thanks! I tried a Hently Farm Zinfendel the other night and was very impressed!

I wasn't game enough to try the Zinfandel after recently having the 1997 Peel Estate Zinfandel which was pretty similar to a dry port and not really a style that I like (and strangely enough didn't go that well with fish).

G'day

I have to agree with the Xabregas comments. Their standard Shiraz 2007 was a knockout (so was the riesling 2008) and their Show Reserve wines are looking very good too. I look forward to trying/buying some more.

Cheers

Wine, women and song. Ideally, you can experience all three at once.
