July - What have you been buying?

Post by Craig(NZ) »

People, you know the story. we taste a lot, we rate a lot, we discuss a lot. What we buy though surely is the hurdle mark that matters.

Let us know.

For me not a lot but have cornered a few 07 Craggy Range Block 14 Syrah's. This must compete with the 07 Church Rd Reserve Syrah as the smartest premium Syrah buy this year? $28 is very smart buying me feels

Will be poking around UWC this weekend (Bastille Day) to see if they have any interesting specials, so I'm sure this won't be all...

Just my annual Wild Duck Creek Standing order:
1 * 07 Alan's Cabernet
5 * 07 Springflat Shiraz
4 * 07 Duck Muck
6 * Sparkling Duck #5
2 * 08 Fortified Shiraz

That little lot cost quite a packet so I'm trying to ignore anything else I see however I've seen an exceptional offer from Seppelt so I'm not sure of my resolve.
Cheers,
Kris

Not much for me this month, being a dry month, but then I go and get:

1 case Mount View Estate Pinot Noir 2008

Hunter Vally Pinot Noir. Who woulda thought !?

Edit: and now a dozen Warrenmang Black Puma Shiraz 2000...

...and now a dozen Willespie Shiraz 1998...oh dear...I was supposed to stop with just the pinot...

...and just snuck in a few odds and ends:

1 bottle Seppelt Coborra Pinot Gris 2004 (possibly a bit of a gamble)
2 bottles Seppelt Drumborg Cab.Sauv 1999
6 bottles Grampians Estate Black Sunday Friends Sparkling Shiraz 2006
Bring on August !!!

Bowen Estate Cabernet Merlot Cabernet Franc x 2 1999

Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1995 x 3

inspired after recently having a 2004 Bowen shiraz that was v good on the night (1st half) but was doing somersaults the night after, 24hrs later(the 2nd half).

Hi Kris
Do you have a standing order for five Springflats or is that all you were allocated? My standing order (not my allocation) changed from 6 to 5, so I don't know what's going on!

I am hoping to make up for a lack of the Blend this vintage with some Sparkling and Fortified, but haven't heard back from the winery.

Cheers

Duck only makes them when the material is good enough so they are ALL good vintages. The 02 and 04 would certainly be up there. The 07 is the first for a couple of vintages. The 04 might have been the last. Or maybe the 05. Can't remember. There was definitely none last year anyway. This year it was $200 a bottle but I think the last time it was $120 so it's gone up a bit recently. Still going to be cheaper direct than anywhere else. Secondary market it can be up to $450 so judge for yourself what a good price might be.

It's a big wine so if you like them intense, big and bold then go for it. I haven't tasted the 07 yet. Duck usually does a tasting when he's in town so I'll post notes. There shoud be old notes from previous tastings if you search for them.
Cheers,
Kris

My standing order is 6 Alans, 6 Springflats, 6 Blends, 4 Duck mucks, 6 Sparklings, 3 reserve cabs, 2 reserve shiraz so what I've stated is what I was allocated. I asked for the fortifieds to make up the case (and I quite like it and was quite impressed at the last tasting). I know volume was seriously down for 07 and I don't think the reserves or the blend were made in 07. Actually just reread the newsletter and stocks were 80% down!

I generally buy all that I'm offered and my standing order has changed over the years to include the reserves and the duck muck but you usually need to ask to get it changed.
Cheers,
Kris

Ditto -- the only wine I've bought so far this month (but for $25, a special that Moore Wilsons in Wgtn is running throught till 17 Aug ... ) -- opened one alongside a Vidals '02 Soler Syrah last weekend. Both excellent, but the CR had noticeably more happening than the Vidals. Just reinforced my perception of its quality.

Cheers

haha. Ditto almost. I had a 02 Soler on Wednesday night and the 07 Church Rd Reserve and 07 Craggy Bl 14 on Friday night. The Friday night wines were superior to me. The Vidals was good (and definitely a watershed wine) but I think suffers from its "14.8%" alcohol - it has moments of "wishy washyness"

I bought a couple more 07 CRR today $30. Can you have too much of this wine? Also bought a couple of 06 Penfolds Bin 28 for $17.90 at pns. I actually quite liked this when I tried it a couple of weeks ago. Will do for cold Friday night fare. Seems to me Penfolds is struggling to get stick on its price rises.

I love Canobolas Smith wines, especially the Alchemy. I am attending a Canobolas Smith degustation dinner this week, so I'm sure I will be purchasing some more of their wines too.
