When I look at these results, as well as other show results, I stare in amazement at the non-medal winning wines. There are some big names that received very low marks, that have been given very high marks by wine reviewers. There are also some amazing wines that receive seriously low marks as well.

I am not sure what to make of this. I just don't understand how there can be so much difference between reviewers and judges. Beats me

Have to agree, some results were a bit scary to be honest. Not just one or but some dozens of well regarded wines not even registering a bronze. Others which I have sampled and tagged 'never again' gained medals. Interested in the opinion of those who know the show circuit process and can shed light.

Seems as though the results are designed to nudge those who are inclined to doubt the value of wine show awards into a state of certainty.

Hi Michael
Another very nice Riesling from 2005 takes out the show. A very good riesling year.

The Pinot Char bubbles from Hardys was a standout. I'm not a white bubbles fan usually, but I will buy a bottle or two of this one.

A nice new range from Echelon Wine Partners. The company, only started 15 months ago, is part of McWilliams to focus on the best of the best fruit and make small parcels for sale into the upper markets (restaurants & fine wine shops). The one year old shiraz class 18 is an example of how good they are, seven wines entered and four gold, two silver and a bronze.

A nice montepulciana from Warburn estate. Lovely juicy number I would love to drink. Not a lot of fruit available so quantity will be low. The brand may keep it out of the toffee nosed shops so could end up in the chains at the right price.

VFM wines like 10 Thorn Clarke Shotfire Quartage and 09 Shiraz were very good as was the 09 Rosemount diamond shiraz.

Lots to remember, I will have to go back to the catalogue. Sleep catchup is higher on the agenda currently.

I just typed a quite long response to this but the bloody network connection dropped out and it is gone.

Basically, good wines are made for the long haul and don't always show well early.

I started stewarding almost ten years ago as I couldn't see why my favourite wines did not rate as well early.

The process is very fair, but if the first time a bottle get to the judge it is not showing it's best, it gets pushed down the order and a better showing wine gets up.
