Wot? Sunday already....
I bought the 01 JH for $55 thinking i had a good buy. I just does nothing for me, lacks real weight and concentration especially when comparing it to the big dark brut that the 98 was. i dunno, but I dont really think aussie shiraz is the tour de force it once was. The great vines fruit seem to be spread over countless labels these days seeing a dilution of quality ( I know this doesnt explain JP but just thinking out loud and in general)
I just thought it tried to be too big without the fruit to fill the frame, it was refined yes, but at the same time seemed to me very boring.
I searched for redeeming features as I really wanted the wine to impress but it didnt. After a simple wine like the 04 wynns shiraz it showed slightly more refinement, but way less interest and the qpr at rrp is pathetic

so now over the last 12 months ive had the 98 which over delivered and the 01 which under delivered so hey, was it just the bottle?? I have one more to complete that jusgement
agree with you on cloudy bay. what ever happenned to them? the pinot has never been good, the chardonnay is occassionally fantastic (96, 00) but mostly average, and the sauvignon blanc has only really been stellar in the deep mists of the past 96,97?? an icon brand that has really failed to keep ahead. i buy a bottle of the sblanc every year as a tradition, but it is only now 'very good' - not astonishing.

Agreed the 05 Durif cleanskin is a bit porty and disjointed (but it is only $10!)
Thats why it was a cleanskin. Everything else on your list cost a little bit more.
The 05 Reserve Durif (which is the bit John West didn't reject) just got an Outstanding from Halliday in his 07 Companion.
That makes 4 in the last 2 years.

Veuve Cliquot NV Nice way to start a very pleasant evening. Honey and yeasty notes. Complimented a goats cheese and caramelised capsicum canape perfectly. Credit
01 Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir OMG! This wine could turn me into a pinotphile. I think this is my WOTY to date. Just amazing stuff. A cloudy purple colour. So much going on in the glass though. Sweet strawberries, cherries and earthiness. Went perfectly with the truffled omlette. Very complex flavours in the mouth rolling over and over with fantastic length. Kinda savoury, kinda sweet, not too much of anything and lots of everything. I only got one bottle of this in a mixed half dozen and seriously regret not getting a lot more. There may have been limits, thinking about it. This has really opened my eyes to pinot which I've never really been much of a fan of but can now understand all the fuss. High Distinction
96 Rockford Basket Press Shiraz Wow! Another stunner. Decanted about an hour prior and this was about perfect timing. Deep purple colour. Huge whiffs of blackcurrent and anise coming out of the decanter and glass. I had one of these a couple of years ago and it was clearly too young but this has now just hit its straps at 10 years of age and is lovely. In the mouth, lots of black fruits, a bit of coffee, perfectly integrated oak and another long finish. A beautiful wine drinking perfectly. Just in its window and will last for ages. High Distinction.
96 E&E Black Pepper Shiraz Another great wine but looking just a little flat after the Basket Press. Just didn't have quite the same purity and vibrancy of flavour. Never-the-less still a very good wine. This is the third of these I've had this year and it's hard to tell if it wasn't as good as the first or just in the company of the previous two, it just wasn't quite as good. More black fruits, primarily blackberry. Distinction.
94 DeBortoli Noble One Quite brown in colour but still clear. Muted apricots on the nose. Still holding up quite well despite the colour. Still some acid holding it all together. Sweet but not cloying. A nice drink. Credit.
97 Seppelt Tinta Molle Vintage 'port' Actually, I don't think it says port on the label and there might even be shiraz in there too. Overwhelming spirit on the nose. Probably brandy. Very hard to get around this. After a while in the glass, the fruit started to come through but I'd almost finished it by then. Not so pleasant really. Based on where it was heading I'll give it a Pass but there's a little left in the bottle that I really should try again. Pass.
Current vintage Montana Pinot Noir Didn't look at what the vintage was but I assume it the current release. A clear red purple colour. Fairly simple and sweet with cherry and strawberry characteristics. Nothing too savoury or earthy here but still quite enjoyable none-the-less. Credit
01 Domain Phillip Jones Old Cellar Pinot Noir More complexity here and much more of the savoury spectrum of flavours. A cloudy light red, purple colour. Slightly tart finish. Nowhere near the quality or depth of flavour of the Premium but also nowhere near the price. Nice complex wine but didn't have the oomph of the premium. Credit

I can't follow a post like that Kris! What a selection.
The single wine I had over hte last week was a 2000 Wild Duck Creek Springflat Shiraz Pressings. While still quite young, there were some questions by David Anderson regarding the corks in this wine for this particular vintage and as a consequence he held them back from release for an extra year. I didn't experience any problems (luckily).
Anyway, the wine was fantastic. Big, brooding shiraz that was not so full of big, biting tannins. This meant that my wife actually enjoyed it as well. This had a great mouthfeel and is from great fruit (the 2000 WDC Springflat Shiraz is also a great wine, a bit different t the pressings obviously). I'm pretty sure this wine will last at least for another 6-8 years.

Hi all,
Penfolds 1998 Coonawarra Bin 128 Shiraz. A good cool climate shiraz with some sweetness but not too much. By coincidence our host had a Redmans 1999 Coonwarra Shiraz which was also very good. And 13% alcohol to boot. Style is not fashionable but right up my alley.

Garnet red in colour, the wine displays aromas of red fruits supported by a hint of spices earth and leather. Restrained flavours of red fruits and spices are present on the medium bodied palate, finishing with subtle drying tannins and a hint of coffee.

Not a bad drop is it? Bought some in the first week of July for $10.90 a bottle (dozen price) at Dan Murphys.
In this price range I prefer 2004 Hardy's Oomoo, but of course wine is all up to personal preference.

Not going to argue with you on the Oomoo, McLaren Vale and Hunter Shiraz are my two favorites this winter. The latter is more flexible in pairings with Italian food.
