TN: Peccavi Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 (Margaret River)

I'd not heard of Peccavi before - apparently a small producer that distributes mainly through restaurants, I think. 2011 was a top year in MR and that was what attracted me.

Deep purple in colour. Typical MR cabernet nose, with blackberries, cassis, mulberries, tomato leaf, and cedary oak. The palate is complex, with developed dark fruits, leather, and black olive. Tannins are totally integrated, and acid plays only a supporting role. Medium to full bodied, and finishes quite long.

At its peak, I suspect - in fact, it would have been interesting to see this wine earlier in its life.

My last comment in the tasting note 4 years ago was "At its peak, I suspect - in fact, it would have been interesting to see this wine earlier in its life.: So why did I leave it so long to have another look?

the wine has mostly hibernated in the intervening years. Slightly more developed, but still sound and displaying most of the characteristics described in the original tasting note. The palate is showing pronounced cocoa powder (which wasn't to the fore before), and leather (which was). There's still primary dark fruits, palate complexity and weight, and this gets better in the glass.

Dare I say (again) at its peak - this time, definitely unlikely to improve. I still have another couple of bottles which I won't forget about this time.

Peak is such a hard term to define, even for ourselves (as your observation attests), but also definitely varies between tasters (perfectly illustrated by Cellartracker TNs).

I still put drinking windows into CT for wines I have, but I treat them as indicative at best, and am happy to drink most wines outside of that notional peak'. Wines are rarely undrinkable when young, even Barolo/Barbaresco these days, nor do they suddenly drop off a cliff (unless the cork fails). Maybe with screwcap, a case purchase will enable the drinker to get a better feel for what 'peak' is for them?
