Haselgrove H Shiraz: Rubbish for $67

Post by Anonymou »

I was recently given a bottle of 2002 Haselgrove H Shiraz.
What a disappointment.
The oak was out of control, far overwhelming the fruit. Not good oak mind you - overly charry, almost acrid oak like that peaty smoky taste in a strong scotch.
I think the winemaker was trying to cover up the poor quality fruit which was overripe and jammy - but not concentrated and rather dilute.
After drinking this wine I looked it up in Halliday and apparently it costs 67 bucks. Are you kidding? I have had better $15 wines.
We drank this along side a 1999 St Henri - which was outstanding in comparison (and cheaper) and made the Haselgrove look very poor indeed.
I also noticed a plastic taste - perhaps Brett, which could explain the poor performance.
Has anyone else out there had this wine and thought the same thing?

The 2002 Haselgrove H Shiraz costs around $25 from some retail outlets in Melbourne; Halliday must be incorrect

It was a $40 wine about the 96 vintage but since then Haselgrove have had big financial problems and I think change of ownership/s.

They seem to be a producer of discount wines now but still trying to trade on their former high prices, you know the drill, "RRP $50 but yours for only $20, $19, $18 or whatever you'll pay for it. I think one of those clearance places has just been plugging the 02.

As to the wine, I found them to be overtly charry oaked and a bit dead fruitish. A fair bit of bang but no class and hard to drink more than a glass I thought.

At Wine Australia Haselgrove were selling their H reds for $200/case. While the H Shiraz might have sold for $65 five years ago, this proved unsustainable.

Nick Haselgrove stopped making these wines after the 98 vintage.
I believe the 02 H Shiraz was only sold to Vintage cellars in Australia.
The 96 and 97 sold for $30 and the 98 $35.
The 01 sold for $15 at Kemenys.

The best wines are the 96 and 98. The 94 has passed its use by date.

How do I know all this? Im a fan!

Sorry, Nick Haselgrove made the wines upto the 01 vintage, and was still chief winemaker and in charge of processing in 02, Paul Dunnewick was also considered winemaker at this time.
Cheers,
Colin.

You should get what you pay for and the 98 H Shiraz was just fine two weeks ago for the $20 I paid for it at auction although the AO is very prominent but some nice fruit also. For more than the $30 mark, especially the $67 mark, would rather a poke in the eye with a sharp stick :!:
