March 2015 Purchases
March 2015 Purchases
With my new found love for Champagne and fine sparkling I just couldn't walk away from this temptation at a touch under 50% off:
4 X 2004 Taittinger Comtes BdB (I trust ur judgment Mike)
7 X 2000 Arras EJ Carr
2 Piper Heidseck NV
2 Lanson Black NV
1 X 2004 Lanson Gold Label
4 X 2004 Taittinger Comtes BdB (I trust ur judgment Mike)
7 X 2000 Arras EJ Carr
2 Piper Heidseck NV
2 Lanson Black NV
1 X 2004 Lanson Gold Label

I'm feeling the pressure - especially knowing how expensive they are in Oz ! Leave them well cellared for some years
Re: March 2015 Purchases
Is under $150 ok for them then, Mike?
Thanks Rens, it was a bit hairy for awhile - now have hundreds of uprooted trees - mostly large gums.
Has anyone tried the Ed Carrs?
Cheers

Under $150 for the CdC 04 is excellent!! And assuming that's the Late Disgorged EJ Carr 2000, you've kicked 7 more massive goals. Excellent wine.
I took it along a while back to a fantastic dinner... reports here... http://forum.auswine.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13004
Think it cost me $110 at the time from memory.
Nice work Luke!
Cheers

I assume you bought them overseas? That's a good price in the UK and US right now. If you bought them in Oz, PM me please, as I'll take another dozen !

Re: March 2015 Purchases
Yes it is the Arras EJ Carr Late Disgorged 2000 - good to hear it's a massive wine. A bit worried when I read that it should be consumed by 2016 - any opinions regarding its durability? It was a few bucks below $80 on a stand with the Comtes which had been reduced to $149.50. I just felt this impulse come over me and had to buy the lot. Will look forward to bringing one along to an offline sometime!
Am I alone in buying more wine than I can afford or drink?

You are never alone when you have good wine to share Luke!!
Have you got any Brisbane travel plans this month or next? We might be able to coordinate an offline before gpk heads back overseas.

Re: March 2015 Purchases
I was fortunate to have dinner with Serge Hochar of Chateau Musar with my wine group and he was very emotional about the quality of the vertical tasting, interest and knowledge. Saddened to hear of his passing he was a lovely character.
12 x Musar Reds from 1999 & 2004
12 x Musar whites from 1999 & 04 and 6 x 06.
All for the cellar in Australia for the long term. I have had the wines back to the 50's and they can be extraordinary. Served blind with age they can outperform many of the Bordeaux greats. Under $30 for a 15 year old wine that ages for 50+ a no brainer!
The $AUD is providing a market for Australian wines that was perhaps snatched away over the last few years of the mining boom.
Duval Plexus 2011 white x 24. $18AUD hard to beat in HKG for quality.
Teusner Riebke 2012 x 12.
Larry Cherubino Shiraz FR 2009 x 12

A quick overnighter in the Barossa filled the shopping cart...
2 x 2013 Torbreck "Fish's" Shairaz
1 x 2012 Torbreck "The Struie"
1 x 2012 Massena Howling Dog Durif
1 x 2012 Grant Burge 1887 Shiraz
1 x 2011 Rockford Basket Press
6 x 2012 Rockford Rifle Range (375ml)
1 x 2014 Rockford Black Shiraz
For those that may be interested, Rockford currently have their BP and Black Shiraz for sale through the cellar door at the moment (no requirement to be a Stonewaller)..
Another highlight of the day was the chance to taste The Laird from Torbreck.. No doubt it will be the first, and last, time I will ever have the opportunity to try a $900 bottle of wine.. Gotta say, it was magnificent! It is the first time I have ever been to the CD at Torbreck, but was very impressed that they had all but 3 of their wines available for tasting (The Laird was open but not officially available, but we got lucky).. The 2006 RunRig was something else also.. Phew, what a day!

Re: March 2015 Purchases
On the way home I picked up a few tasters;
1 x 2013 Penfolds Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon
1 x 2013 Henschke Johann's Garden
1 x 2014 Kalleske Shiraz VP
Now, while trying to broaden my horizons, mid-last year I made the rookie mistake of opening a Rockford Shiraz VP 2005 thinking it would be like a typical tawny where I could slowly drink it over the course of the next few months. So before I open this Kalleske, should it be consumed within a day or so of opening and while I know that it could happily spend more time in the bottle, does it really need to do so?

6x 2014 Tyrrells Vat1 Semillon
3x 2013 Tyrrells Vat 9 Shiraz
6x Saddlers Creek Bluegrass Shiraz 2013
6x Saddlers Creek Bluegrass Cab Sav Shiraz Blend 2013
I had already bought 6 Vat 1 a number of months ago but didnt want to taste them & kill 1 off. Bought purely on expectation from top winery & year. So went to the cellar door in the Hunter just to see what I had buried in the cellar. All I could say is wow. What a wine. Possibly the best young semillon I have ever had. Everything in its place, lime, acid full of flavour but balanced. Needless to say I bought more. If you dont have this yet in yours, what are you waiting for?
Also popped into Saddlers Creek always enjoyed their Bluegrass Range as a VFM everyday red. Anyway tried the Shiraz, Blend & straight Cab. Liked all of them but actually found the blend more approachable than the cab which they restrict to members only. I couldnt justify membership here. They pitch it as just 36 bottles of year as a commitment. I like the wine, but that is just too much. Do I really want to dominate my cellar with their wine? Anyway - no striaght cab for me.

It's good stuff hey. We only have a fridge that's full at ~38 bottles and a quarter of them are these. I'm hoping that we like the 12 enough to get six more but that'll cause space issues (a good problem). When we move into a proper house, we'll get a large fridge and then we can keep more of it

Re: March 2015 Purchases
Offsite cellar is sadly bursting at the seams with a few purchases still to arrive I have no idea how I'll fit in. Home wine cupboard looking quite full too. Quite a list of items piling up to buy but simply no where to put anything. Seems the price of wine storage has gone up in the past few months after availablility decreased, so don't want to pay the higher prices for a second or bigger cupboard. Zero purchases this month - which is sad, but I hear my wallet sighing with relief.
