Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
Beijing House
Hawker Shops
7.00 pm
Attendees
- Paul & Tammy - "might bring an older Moda from Primo Estate (amarone-styled cabernet merlot blend). Could bring bubbles or a white as well."
- Matt - a Jules Desjourney Moulin a Vent 2008 and a dryer style German riesling.
- Travis and Mrs Travis
- Ross - "an aged semillon and seeing Paul has the big italian style Bordeaux blend covered I reckon a 2005 Wedgetail Shiraz might do the trick"
- redstuff - 04 Kalleske Greenock or 04 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache
- Myself & Daayna (and a female colleague who is interested in wine) - 2008 Bannockburn Douglas and a 1996 Tahbilk Marsanne (plus several large bottles of San Pellegrino and six glasses).
No theme, just bring something divine and give us a heads up so we can try and even out varieties/styles etc
Should be fun...
(Will need to limit numbers to ten at this stage which- but I'll go and see the people at the restaurant tonight and see if we can't find a bigger table)

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 23 May
A theme... like "the Fine wines of Botswana" perhaps?
No not at this stage Ross, I was more interested in seeing who was up for it. Of the three dinners so far we have only had one theme, Burgundian varietals, so perhaps another theme like Spanish or Italian (or both) maybe in order.
A venue has also yet to be decided on, although I'd favour somewhere on the Northside.

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 23 May
Can do the 23rd.
Themes, themes...verticals of chenin blanc please? Not.
Happy to either stick to a country, region or a grape type. Plenty of spain in the cellar. Not so much in the quality space for Italy however. Plenty of bits and pieces of France and Oz floating around.
Are we still keen to look at that Vietnamese restaurant in Macquarie? Great for cheap and cheerful.
Had a dinner at RockSalt recently which wasn't bad. What about Ellacure in Bruce? Not sure about BYO for either though.
Cheers

Rocksalt is but $10 per head IIRC
Ellacure is but would prefer if you didn't if you get my drift

No from me. Could have done the 16th but not the 23rd. Go ahead without, I reckon.

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 30 May
Changed the date to the 30th and will book at the Vietnamese in Macquarie that Matt recommended.
Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 30 May
Sounds good. I pulled a bunch of older reds out of the cellar yesterday. The Vat 9 didn't survive past last night, but I'll bring another older red. Maybe a white blend as well. Thanks for organising.
Paul.
Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 30 May
Locked in for the 30th. Will probably bring a mate. Will bring a white and a red. Does anyone have a fetish for a particular grape or style of wine?
Ross, Red stuff, Dlo? Care to join us?
The menu can be found here: http://menus.grubfinder.com.au/sites/default/files/Kinh%20Do%20Vietnamese.pdf#zoom=100

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 Friday 30 May
On second thoughts I won't be booking at that Vietnamese restaurant (Kinh Do) in Macquarie, as, up to ten minutes ago, it had escaped my attention that a car had driven through the window in March and hence they are not taking bookings at this time. Pity, as it had some glowing reviews.
So with that in mind we will return to our inaugural digs in Hawker (with it's sublime dumplings), unless the marauding cars of Belconnen have rendered that unavailable as well.
Will update post tomorrow with details and attendees.

While there is still some time to go it's probably a good time to start a tally of wines that will be provided (refer to original post).

Tammy & I will be there. I might bring an older Moda from Primo Estate (amarone-styled cabernet merlot blend). Could bring bubbles or a white as well.

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
I reckon I'll stump up a 2009 Mader Rosacker Gewurz GC and seeing Paul has the big italian style Bordeaux blend covered I reckon a 2005 Wedgetail Shiraz might do the trick. I have to find out if my wife is able to come

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
It's looking like a cracker of a line up!
I'll visit the cellar and grab a German riesling of some sort. Kabinett or Spatlese that is the question? Let me know if you have a distinct preference and I'll see what I can do. Edit: seeing as Ross is going to bring the GC I'll look to bring a GG of some sort- should be a good match up.
Do you think gamay would work with the food? If so happy to share a Jules Desjourney Moulin a Vent 2008. Opened a JD L'interdit (blend of Fleurie and another sub-region that escapes me) a few weeks ago and it was absolutely singing. If not there's always a Pinot of some sort (duck anyone?)
Bringing a plus one - a workmate wants to get back into wine. Will confer and confirm with him about what he intends to bring.
Travis: want to share a cab? Can split it three ways and you can have a genuine lash on the night? PM's later today.
Cheers

Love a good Gamay. The Gewurz has a bit of RS so I'd prefer a Kabinett

haha...the booj is locked in. Will drop the GG idea and go for either a Kabinett or a dryer style German riesling - maybe a Peter Lauer 'Kern' - need to check stocks and will confirm.
Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
Hi Matt, I'll get back to you ASAP re the cab. My wife might be coming as well... or we may both have to bail. Sorry to much things around but I'll be back in touch ASAP.
Cheers, Travis.
Cheers, Travis.
Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
I'll probably bring an 04 Kalleske Greenock or 04 Greenock Creek Cornerstone Grenache.
Anyone going back to Gungahlin want to share a cab?

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
No worries Travis - let me know what you want to do closer to the night. I can always come and pick you and your better half up and then we can get a cab from my place. My colleague will also be departing from my house.
Sorry Redfstuff: Travis and I are southside. Try Ross and Duncan for the northside.
We could always cap for this event at 11 for the Beijing House? It's pretty casual - wasn't the dress code for the first dinner there "shorts"?
Any thoughts on bringing glassware?
Looking forward to catching up.
Cheers

Re: Canberra Offline No. 4 - Friday 30 May 7pm
Having moved to Page two weeks ago, my partner and I are literally walking distance so we won't be cabbing it, but Ross is in Gungahlin.
I have reserved a table which will comfortably fit ten, so if we get a full turn out we will easily squeeze one more in.
If anyone can bring glassware it will be good, but like other nights it isn't particularly formal so anything with a decent bowl will be welcome.
Looking forward to it...
Julian
