Bordeaux en primeur 2013

Post by grapeobserver »

By all reports this is a poor Bordeaux vintage (2007 like perhaps), en primeur tastings have completed, and some slightly lower first tranche prices are trickling out from the chateaux per liv-ex. Yet I haven't seen much on offer in Australia so far. In fact, I'm not sure I've seen anything at all. Perhaps the combination of stubbornly high prices, a poor vintage and high taxes has culminated in its logical conclusion... That said, I like Bordeaux, so the tap being turned off is not the outcome I want either as a consumer.

Only thing I've noticed here in Oz so far is a few distributors taking this opportunity to remind us of all the high end (1sts, super 2nds etc) stock they still have of previous vintages! But wait, now at discount prices! Will be interesting to compare those 'discount' prices with the en primeurs...

I think 2013 is worse than 2007 (based on just reading multiple opinions, not doing any tasting!, so very much IMHO)

I don't think this happens too much in Australia but this is one of those vintages where I think retail at release may even be cheaper than EP....The Chinese market is a lot smarter than they were and they're not going to chase poor vintages...

You can still get 2007s cheap....dirt cheap really...I think a lot of people are sick of looking at some of it and are just getting rid of it....The impression I got is some people may buy just so they're in line to get the next great vintage rather than really expecting to make money off of it...

I think for the 2013 vintage, regardless of the EP price, it would be better to wait for the wines to hit the retail shelves, unless you are keeping a vertical on Lafite and such... Then buy a bottle or two to try, before taking the plunge.

I my self will be staying away from the vintage, or bordeaux EP in general, and back fill, as long as at a good prices, and if I can find them, otherwise my money is going to other region, such as Italy and Spain.

For the EP prices on 2013, I would go for 2008 vintages instead. At the current situation, it will be quite interesting to see what would happen when the next 'Vintage of the Century' come along, in regard to prices and
what will happen to all those un sold wines from previous vintages, that is sitting at the chateaus or negociants.

Cheers
Andy
