I've had that '66 a few times. It's an incredible wine. So svelte.

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

Thanks Jamie. Is Alessandria a traditionalist? I also have a few bottles of Sandrone Le Vigne '13. When do you think a good time to drink? Min. 15 years from vintage, assuming good storage? 16 Alessandria Normale very good. 95 points from me. Traditionalist, yes. Sandrone quite boring wines for me.

Quite a few of my samples that come direct from Italy have 'Olive oil' marked as the contents. Not had a problem so far.

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

[quote="Rossco"] 2016 Cantine Garrone 'Cà d'Mate' Valli Ossolane Rosso TCA or some other fault I suspect. Upon opening all I could get was a raw wood / raw cork (nose & palate) type notes. It was quite distracting and was almost like they used 100% new oak barrique for 48 months. Tripl...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

Wonder if Sandrone has moved to DIAM? They're pretty innovative. Great your bottles in good shape. I remember tasting with Barbara Sandrone and she said they were so horrified with the secondary market and their reputation, they started a small 10 year cellar release program. I've always been a buy...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

I stumbled across 2016 Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo Bricco San Pietro . I'm not familiar with this producer. I can't find many tasting notes for older vintages in the usual places, but what I can find uses words like "polished cedar" and "woody spices", so I'm concerned it's an...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

I've purposely avoided purchasing 2015 Barolo/Barbaresco... only bought 10 bottles to date, turning down most of the offers I receive. 2015 is a great vintage, but 2016 is even greater by all accounts. I plan to buy a lot of 2016's. Wise. Have tasted both vintages widely both from as barrel samples...

Re: The Barolo / Barbaresco / Nebbiolo thread

Acidity in some of the 2017s may well be a good dose of tartaric due to hot vintage.
Thought 17 Massolino Neb pretty good, but noted a bit of tang. Fruit in the red spectrum as I recall, but tasted quickly at winery (but well enough). Screwcap in Australia, but I tasted under cork at winery.

Both smoking wines! Superb. The BdV finer and lithe, the Ravera (as ever) a bit a brute, but also outstanding.

On Coleraine - Te Mata Estate Coleraine Vertical at Rockpool Bar & Grill – August 2018 A wine that pretty much needs no introduction, and for me, probably New Zealand’s greatest red wine. It was also a (unexpected) pleasure to have Campbell sitting alongside me for the tasting, so maybe he’ll ch...

Personal accountability in reference to having your name on a result, rather than being, more or less, anonymous.

There's no link between MIke having done wine shows (past tense), and dodgy critics. Fail to see the connection there.

Re: 2018 Sydney Royal Wine Show results

Just had a little read of this and offer a few comments, some of them self-promoting, and some to address misconceptions. When wines like 2017 Tyrrell's Vat 47 Chardonnay and 2013 Vat 1 Semillon get no medal, there's still something of a problem either with process or judging. Same with 2014 Mount P...

That 08 B.Mascarello is an INCREDIBLE wine. Right up there with the best Barolo I've had. 2008 is a superb vintage. Wise people would back-fill. Wise and rich people. B Mascarello has been elevated into the highest echelons. I wisely bought in magnums and artist labels which sees $1500 AUD a magnum...

Re: Any love for Merlot

Merlot one of the great grapes of the world. Pomerol in particular, and St Em.
In terms of Australia - Blue Poles Reserve, Hillcrest Premium, Giant Steps have a good go, and Tarrawarra can be good. The old Coldstream Hills Reserve used to good too. There's a few more as well.

2007 Traversa Sori Ciabot - good, rich, a bit rustic, plenty of fruit. Doing well. 2006 Benevelli Ravera di Monforte - lovely, in a good place. 2011 Serafino Rivella Montestefano - Nice, but a bit too squishy for me in texture. 2011 Giovanni Rossa Vigna Rionda - very fine for a 2011. Delicious. Appr...

Yes! It's not our job to tell you what you'll like, it's our job to suggest what you might like, and to be gatekeepers and sift through the shit to get the gold (so to speak). For the Barolo that Wine Front reviewed higher, range of scores: 90 - 96.5, compared to 87 - 95.5. Galloni more conservative than the Wine Front crew for the majority of Barolo. 2011 would be interesting to compare the two - I've not analysed the data, however critic preference likely to come into ...
