Re: Advice about buying wine in NZ required.

Mr Tigger is on the money. The store in Cromwell was called Pembrokes. There is now a sushi store there (Cromwell's hit the big time - two sushi stores!). John had two stores, and the one in Wanaka is still operating, in addition to WFW. In can be a playground for sourcing some iconic Aussie brands ...

Re: Grape Mates - Riesling Refresher

Dave, What a great tasting - excellent notes and equally excellent photos. The whole tasting looked very well put together - a class act - a bugger that we don't have something like that locally here. Hopefully this sort of thing encourages people to get out there and explore all of the diverse pers...

Off the top of my head, my fav nz gw producers in approx order of glory would be Dry River Johanneshof Stonecroft Vinoptima Villa Maria Lawsons Dry Hills Montana Askerne Nice one. I'd have a similar list actually, though I don't think I'd put Askerne on there quite yet. Black Ridge are a bit of a s...

I haven't seen this one around. I shall look out for it though. cheers Carl I thought Craig(NZ) may have put his boot in (or not in this instance) over this new bottling. The first vintage apparently and not a wine for Burg freaks I'd say! Definitely not, but horses for courses. This vineyard immed...

Re: TN - Vinoptima Gewurztraminer 2003

Hey Craig/Rawshack, I prefer the '04 to the '03. I found the '03 had a bit of heat for mine, but I haven't tasted it now probably for a couple of years. The '04 a bit more understated, balanced and fine. Check out Johanneshof and Dry River too - probably the other two in the top three of NZ's Gewurz...

Re: Coonawarra shockers

I've got a good idea - why don't they make wine in one big factory to an homogonised recipie that doesn't dare change from year to year -That way the poor consumers will never have to "suffer" wine that is different or reflects the season. It's very easy to criticise winemakers but hey, r...

Re: Wot?...... Damn - Its Sunday again.....

2007 Felton Road Riesling - less refined than the '08; rougher, crunchier, juicier. More phenolics, but I like that. 2002 Fromm Riesling - exquisite; NZ's answer to the Mosel. One of the best Rieslings I've ever had from this country. 2006 Mountford Chardonnay - the LEAS of NZ. Gobs of fruit, magic...

Re: Dry River wines - help please, kiwis

Hi Kris, I realize you've probably bought your allocation by now, but I thought I'd just give my input. The gewurz and syrah, for mine, are the two highlights. I haven't had a Syrah I haven't enjoyed yet (have had several post-2000 vintages) and whilst the Gewurz can be hot and cold, it's worth the ...

Re: Central Otago Wines - anyone tried??

Hi again Matt, The Peregrine Karearea Pinot Gris is my style of Gris and rates up there as one of NZ's best IMO. I got out to Aurum wines yesterday. Spent some time talking with Tony, who is the father of the winemakers Lucy and Brook. Lucy is French and grew up in Burgundy and both have worked vint...

Re: Central Otago Wines - anyone tried??

Hey Matt, Agree with TK's sentiments, though I'd be careful leaving too many Central Pinots for five years. They're a style suitable for early drinking and most are approachable in their youth; I've been lucky with the older Central Pinots I've kept, but have tasted others that have fallen over surp...

Craig! Just got around to trying "Le Fou", or "Le Poo" - what the hell are you raving about??? Has anyone else tried this wine? I was out there today and very unimpressed. The nose is bizarre, with fruit sweetness that's candied, fairy-floss, sherbert-like sweetness (that I detes...

Re: Vineyards 'fall apart' in South Australia

Hi Carl, Well, modern viticulture in 50 words or less.....it may seem odd that a winemaker may (possibly) be implying that higher crop/thicker canopy may lead to better fruit quality. Certainly, in a situation like we are experiencing, it seems logical to me that loss of moisture would be less dama...

BillMac, Wizz has wrapped things up well - sage advice. I would add that if you're going up north Nelson/Marlborough way, to check out Neudorf, Greenhough and Rimu Grove in Nelson and the likes of Fromm, Herzog, Dog Point and Terravin in Marlborough. When passing through Christchurch, a visit to the...

Fantastic review and tasting notes David, with some equally fantastic wines by the sound of things. Riesling is almost all I drink now. I am curious though. Thanks for the note Mike. I'm yet to try the 2000, but I've tried the '98 and '99. I was curious that you slipped the '99 into some of the more elitist vintages; judging from your tasting note of the 2000, it pretty much mirrors what I would come to expect in the '99. In any case, as you say, perhap...
