Re: Oldest to youngest or vice versa?

An interesting question… In my opinion it depends on the gap between youngest and oldest. If it’s a flight of say 2012-17 then youngest to oldest is unlikely to be an issue. However, if for instance it was 2017, 2012, 2004, 1998 and 1986 where you would likely see a marked difference in primary v te...

Re: Grand Cru Tasting Group (Perth) – August 2021 - Malbec

A question arising from this tasting is what age to drink straight Malbecs.
I’ve had a few tannic beasts from Cahors which start to look good from 8-10 plus years. Bloody enjoyable though, if you can wait.

Just curious. Would you mind sharing the price and if it's S or N version?
It hasn’t landed but I expect $45. I assume it’s the version with Sulphur. I’ve been buying for a few years now, but until your query I didn’t know there was a non-Sulphur version.

I dispense with the Sav, and just go with Cab.

A Kiwi mate likes to use the term ‘Savvy’ for Sauvignon Blanc, but in a theatrical, tongue in cheek way, which is quite amusing.

Not quite up to the standard of the ‘98 I had 18 months ago, but still a damn good drink. Best drinking on night 2 as it had a bit more structure, but held up well over six nights.

Slightly simpler would be to nominate some particular wines to taste and leave up to people locally to procure and possibly share. Depends if you want a semi-serious tasting or perhaps just catch up and crap on about wine and the meaning of life!  I recently signed up to a mates Online b...

It will be interesting to see how far they’ll go to protect their brand. I expect they can harvest less come September, and slowly run down existing stocks, but that would take a lot of discipline.

One imagines with climate change, producing still wines is probably a good option.

TN: 2018 Ringbolt Cabernet Sauvignon

A lot of hoopla surrounding this wine so I had a look, only to come away with mixed feelings. From the first mouthful many will be seduced by the wave of sweet plums, black currant cordial and eucalyptus lovingly engulfing their front palate. However, once that big opening recedes the proverbial emp...

Thanks for the notes. Interestingly your review of the 2013 Riorret The Abbey describes to a tee the Estate version from the same vintage I had recently. It was a nice enough drink when opened but, lacking in acid and stuffing, it fell away quite quickly. I guess not every wine can be like the glori...

Re: Buying from overseas websites

I have no experience buying wine from o/s but I have had some visibility of the import process. While it may not be worth it for a single bottle, you could consider contacting a customs agent just to be aware of the ins and outs of the border clearance processes (customs, ATO, biosecurity etc). Most...

Re: Does every iteration on the Langtons site just get worse?

I’ve been regularly buying wine between 5-10 years old from them for almost a decade and I’ve only had 4 or 5 bottles that seemed heat affected. A few years ago I bought three 20 year old WA Pinot’s. They cost roughly $9 each and were all magnificent. There have been a few punts that haven’t played ...

Re: Does every iteration on the Langtons site just get worse?

Good question. I’ve often wondered the same thing. Not only do they seem to have masses of stock, they also appear to be trying to sell the same stock for months on end with no variation on the reserves. Woolworths have a substantial national warehousing network, however holding large amounts of slo...

1998 Stanton & Killeen VP - Rich, complex and finishing dry and smooth on the finish. I’d had probably 15-20 Australian VP’s at various ages prior to this, but nothing anywhere near as good, or as balanced. I was talking to the owners a few weeks later who said they changed over to using all tr...

Re: The Inconsistencies of Cellartracker

Good question. Some of the reviews can be wildly different, but I guess that with much older wines there is also likely to be greater variation. One imagines cellaring conditions vary as wildly as taste too. I tend to take greater stock in a review like the second one in the OP. I also like that you...

I’m also fond of the Hoddles Creek Estate Pinot Noir and in my opinion another excellent value Yarra Pinot Noir is the De Bortoli Dixon’s Creek Estate. The 2017 is $20 a bottle and maybe even shades the Hoddles Creek. I’ve cellared previous vintages and always had good results. There’s some good val...

All of that falls under the fact that they'll raise the price when you bid, up to the reserve price. Which has already been discussed as legal as a vendor bid. They do this automatically in their auctions. Generally the difference between a shill/dummy bid and a vendor bid is: You can only have a v...

Their business model, without doing anything stupid, gets them nearly 30% of their revenue without taking any risks. They don't have to pay for stock, other people have already paid for it. All they provide is a website and a place to store the stuff while it is being auctioned. You might be right,...

Imagine a bidder wants to buy a wine and there are 5 lots of this wine available in an auction (lets assume that each lot is the same size to keep things simple.) In regards to Polymer's question it seems to have got worse over the last 12 months. Langton's Whinge

I've been buying the odd bottle from Langton's for about five years. I've looked at other auction houses, but Langton's system is very user friendly (despite some more obvious recent glitches). However, the whole auction system now feels so heavily manipulated that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. ...

For what it's worth I've had two bottles of the 2011 this year and both have been pretty good, with more development to come. For a pretty challenging vintage, it's an outstanding result methinks (no 1er probably helps too). I also had two bottles of the 2009 at Xmas which I'd bought at auction. One...

Like many previous posters I've had a few defining moments, but there are four formative wines that really come to mind. The first was the 1986 Wynns Shiraz (or the Hermitage as it was known then). My father had bought several cases on the advice of a mate and occasionally I'd knock one off. Being 1...

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this wine Allan. The estate Chardonnay has been a pretty regular buy for me for a few years now, however for my tastes they either need about six years bottle age or an extended (like several hours) decant. Many times I've tasted a new vintage and found them lack...

Any advice on Cabernets/Bordeaux blends which I look be looking for? I'd be looking for some Margaret River cabernet from 2014. As a previous post notes the vintages have been pretty good in MR since '07, but 2014 was very good. The other thing I'd look closely at is some Canberra shiraz. 2015 was ...
