While not exactly cheap, the Supper Club in Spring Street is an experience not to miss.

Agree....we were at the supper club last night....the list is pretty reasonable......had a Gosset NV, '76 Philliponat Reserve and a Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 2001.....some very smart wines on there.

There's a place called the European that supposedly has a great wine list
If you're in town, go and have a look at the Prince Wine Store, one of the best wine stores I've been to

The European is the restaurant that is below and run by the same people as the Supper Club..they do a great mix of European dishes from across the continent and have a good mix of European wines by the bottle and glass. They also have a wine store next door where you can buy by the bottle and drink at a table.
Had dinner at the European on Monday followed by a few at the supper club and then the Punch Lane wine bar around the corner, pity I didn't bump into DaveB...or maybe I did !!. The Punch Lane wine bar at 35 Little Bourke is worth a look..a clubby/parloury feel with a good wine list and reasonable food too..Syracuse on Bank place is similar.
If you're off to St Kilda suggest the Melbourne Wine room or Enoteca on Gertude St if in the Fitzroy area.

I've been meaning to go to both, but I never get around to it.
Maybe we should organise an off-line and do a sample of both...?

I endorse the comments about Punch Lane wine bar. I've travelled to Melbourne on business probably 50 times in three years and often ate there. They introduced me to some varieties (good moderate priced ones) that I found expanded my experiences.
Enjoy.

Don't go to Gertrude Street Enoteca - they steal your wine.

Had heard a storey about disappearing wine at Enoteca, assume it was the same one, personally never had a problem there although have found that the service leaves a bit to be desired at times..have experienced a few occasions when the wait staff were more interested in talking to each other than serving customers.
Probably not the best spot for a full on offline, the place is pretty small and I don't think they do BYO ??..generally go there for a few after work wines with a few shared entrees etc which are pretty good. Am up for it Rawshack..and anyone else interested..never done an offline before. Another option is Anada..a spanish tapas bar a bit further up the road from Enoteca, great tapas and a pretty good wine list.

I'm well up for a Offline - like you, I've never done one before hey, after eating that Harissa paste last night, I'm not afraid of anything
Anada is awesome - only been once but loved it
BTW I live pretty close in Northcote

Not to be overlooked in the inner city wine bar stakes is Gerald's Bar in Rathdowne St Carlton.
Miles less pretentious than Gertrude St Enoteca, fine food, very fine service. Can't speak for the wine list, but it's long enough, and they always have nice options by glass.
Lastly, a fine communal table setting out back.

Am in Fitzroy..so the geography works, checking diaries with childrens committments etc will find it difficult to find a full night off in the next month at least. The second or third week of June looks okay, Geralds on Rathdowne could be an option although assume they are not BYO, La Luna
or Black Ruby might be a better option ?.
