I so look forward to reading about wines that I haven’t yet tried or am thinking of trying wether it be in my collection, on the store shelves or just a make or vintage of a wine that I am interested in.

So if you have a specific wine that you would really like to hear some experience on, can I suggest you mention it here and hopefully receive some feedback?

I am curious about Bailey's 1920s Block Shiraz, from either 1996 or 1998. They are supposed to be 20-25 year keepers but Jeremy Oliver seems to give them low-ish scores and much shorter drinking windows.

Tahbilk Cabernet Shiraz 1995 One of their cellar releases - just curious if anyone else bought and has already tried it. From the winery's notes, the cabernet component is dominant.

Had the 96 a couple of years ago and was a little varnishy. Could just be the bottle though.

Had the 96 a couple of years ago and was a little varnishy. Could just be the bottle though.

Nup, you are right. They are both over the hill already. IMO the last of the decent vintages from Bailey's was 1992 which is still going strong. 1987 is still soaring. After 92 they went to crap. New owners? Change of winemaker? Best grapes going elsewhere withing the company? Who knows?

I have had a couple presented blind over the last year or so at options lunches and to be honest I was never impressed. It certainly didn't smack you about the face and declare it's lineage, however, as is usual at these events, the detractors immediately oohing and ahhing after the label was revealed. I was just disappointed on each occasion. Sorry but I don't have tasting notes.

I recommend that you drink it while reading the label.

Agree with Davo re the Baileys. They completely lost the plot during their changes of ownership. However, finally they look like they are back on form.

would love to hear anyones comments on Langmeil Freedom Shiraz 1997 just picked it up at auction. Langmeil's website says drink now.

1995 Tahbilk Cabernet-Shiraz (Nagambie) {cork, 12.5%, $20}
It's pretty remarkable in 2008 that a winery sells a 13-year-old wine for a lobster from the cellar door. Even more so when it turns out to be as good as this. Very Tahbilk in style, which is to say faintly leathery and rustic, but all in a good way, with developed small berry fruit and resolved tannins; all is in balance, and leads to a persistent, dry, and very wine-like finish. No blockbuster, obviously, but even a fruit-slut wouldn't object to this. A fine offering and a pleasure to drink; I note the winery has moved on the 96 now!

Maybe not as informative a note as I thought when I wrote it; but yes, the cabernet-dominant hint is accurate. Doesn't need any more time, but there's no rush either - time moves slowly at Tahbilk. I may even be brave enough to go back for the '96...

No notes as such but I would have to agree with the website. Not an OTT style of Barossa shiraz but very pleasant drinking (6 months ago). The more recent releases have more interest. Won't get better from here IMO. Hope the previous owner looked after this one as I feel that even a slight amount of mistreatment could tip this one over the edge.

I bought a couple of these, and based on the one I opened a few months ago, I'm not in any hurry to open the other. Don't have any TN on it, but I remember I held a memorial service for the fruit, which had passed away some time ago.

Thanks Davo, I actually bought this a few years back intending on drinking it for my boys head wetting. Ended up drinking many many other gems but wine of the night (well as much as I can remember) was the awesome MossWood 1994 cab (up there with the best for me). So is it ready to go, past it or just average all round?

Thanks guys, you've given me an idea. I'll open a bottle of the 1998 Bailey's 1920s Block at a friend's dinner this weekend. It will prove instructive. Either I will shock my friend for opening such a young wine (last time I was over I opened a couple of 1980s) or it will show you guys are right.

Interesting that you mention the 1992s Davo. When at cellar door back in 2001, Baileys had some back vintages on tasting. They had an assortment of different vintages from the early 1990s. In my opinion the 1992 Classic Cab and Classic Shiraz were the better ones, edging out the 1991s.

Petaluma Coonawarra Merlot 1998...

I've seen a fairly glowing Jeremy Oliver note but love to hear some others if they are out there...

I have had it before and while I do prefer straight cab in general, it was very refined, well balanced and a great example of its variety. Did it blow me away (98 points)? Not really but I do recall it being very youthful and restrained which is why I haven’t opened up my other two bottles since. Reckon it could get there. The last 96 I drunk was superb and did have a wowish factor but I think the 98 had a bit of power yet to show. Might try again soon I think.

I've been sitting on one bottle of the 98 Petaluma since release. I wasn't gushing over the 96, had a few years back but I remember it as a very good wine.

For me drink now, but found it only average. The earth did not move.

Oops, just realise this refers to the straight Merlot. No idea then.

Yeah you're right Wayno........Me too

But on the 96, my first two bottles were ok but as you mentioned wasn’t gushing over it (two much merlot and a bit light on for me) but the last was a corker. More cabernet driven and heaps of great fruit power with elegance/class to boot. Definitely variation or something.

I have a 99 floating about as well. I understand that's supposed to be excellent too. Most 99 Coonawarras from a range of labels have been pretty good, IMO anyway. Sleeper year +

which 94
this was the last year of the ''reserve'' label. I have a 94 reserve in the cellar and dont know when to drink it

Does that mean your remaining bottle will have a memorial service held over the kitchen sink?
