Penfolds Grange 2004

The upcoming release is just over a month away i think.
For the best part of 5-6 years we all have been glugging down wonderful SA reds from the outstanding 2002 and 2004 vintages.
We all know how good these vintages are.
From what i understand the 2002 Grange is generally regarded the best since the '98 and/or '96.
My guess we will have a buzz/hype about this wine from commentators like no other.

Just my opinion i could be wrong.

Can we expect something monumental from the '04??

A monumental price tag perhaps

Hopefully economic conditions will keep a lid on price, might slurge on one as should be a v good year.

Wonder how high production volumes will be compared to prior years?

Maybe they will dump overseas and keep local price high.

Like others have said, I recommend a quick Grange flight to Auckland.

fwiw I'm sure it will be a great wine ...

I will wait till it hits the clearance bins in the auckland supermarkets

No matter how good it is $400-500 is just too much in a world where other interests exist (not sure all of us live in that world, but im speaking for those that do)

I wouldn't count on it Deano - I heard a whisper there could be a very significant price increase for the 2004 Grange (here and overseas).

Cheers,
Ian

I've been thinking about this for some time, and I feel that the 2004 vintage was MUCH better for Barossa Cabernet than it was for Shiraz (2002 was the bestest lately), so the hype about the 2004 Grange may be ... well just hype.

I'm sure GW might have something to say on this issue, he has generally been a 2002ist.

I was fortunate enough to sit next to Peter Gago at a NYC dinner to celebrate the release of the 2002 Grange a couple of years ago. In hushed tones he mentioned the 2004 was significantly better and will end up along side the great vintages like 71, 76, 86 and 90.

When a reliable wine maker tells me that a wine he's NOT trying to sell at the time is among the best they've ever made, then that's a good pointer IMO.

I plan on picking up at least a 6 pack.

I don't much like 2002 Barossa Shiraz, I like 2002 Cabernet better.
2004 Grange an absolute blinder. I'm going to buy a couple myself.

Mike:
That certainly would have been an enjoyable function and one i'm sure you'll remember for a long time to come!!

I personally really enjoy the time around Grange release...the 'buzz' and so on....i don't know it just sort of ropes you in.

I've have never bought on release mind you only through auction. The 6 -pack should last you a lifetime!!!

I took some English clients to the "Blend Your Own" session at Nuri last month and we had a great time...highly recommended...however the host "highlighted" that the 2008 vintage is "the" best from the 00's...as the "comments" were coming through from the winemakers...but i have to say the three wines, G,S & M, for the session, were all from 2008, were dark and very impressive though...i think i made a GSM at 40:20:20...sorry...i threw the bottle out...i do recall though it was based on the 2004 GSM ratios...the point is...maybe save your Grange dollars for the lower priced 2008 Bin range.

Thanks Ross,

It was a great function. Plenty of bottles of older Grange that night too.

I'm hoping the 04 will retail for about USD220. They tried to jack up the price of the 03 (with what seems to be reduced supply here) and they haven't sold. I guess time will tell....

The interesting anomaly is that here in the UK I can get Grange 1991 for the same price as 2003. 1996 is cheaper than both, and yet is perhaps one of the greatest (my 6-pack is sleeping).

Smart money says Grange should be back-bought - in about every vintage since 1990 ...

Agree. Back loading on good vintages of Grange from UK.

Drlev,

Given this forum is run by a retailer (Gavin), its not the 'done thing' to detail competitors prices (apologies if that is coming across too bluntly). Plus Frontier Wines is not a company I'd recommend to anyone. I'm still waiting for delivery many months after paying for wine, and can't get responses to emails or calls. (Sorry Gavin - I hope this doesn't breach the 'running down competitors' policy).

Just my $0.02.

I am sure they are good wines, but I don't think they aren't worth for what they are asking for.

Cue onset of red mist, mass hysteria and general lemming like behaviour ... I'll buy some when it's all died down.

Not sure how much sway Winefront has with the consumers of suburban South West London matey - might as well go for it now

Nicely said. Don't think a majority of TWF subscribers have the money to grab bottles in a lemming like manner anyway. The ones who are influenced to purchase may just respect CM's palate.

CM is HUGE here is South West London - ahem .

It's just that Grange prices tend to bubble and then settle down. Oliver, JH, CM will all rate it hugely and correctly as a "great Grange" and people will buy into the hype on the illusion of shortage. Remember 1998? There is no hurry to buy this ... my local supermarket stocks Grange and discounts it 20-25% a couple of times a year if bought in a case (even mixed).

Maybe I'm wrong, we'll see in six months I guess.

Can you let us know the price over there when you see it. I need to come to Auckland soon and last time I was over I saw the 2002 going for less than $NZ300 at the big Foodtown down on Quay St. I really should have picked one up. Never mind.
