Greetings all, I think this should be relatively easy?

What, exactly, am I?

I am the first of my line, with the vast majority of me coming from a year described as good, although there were severe spring frosts in my region. My variety from this region is often described as cherrys, black currants, plums, prunes. I am also unique in the way I am barrelled. To assist, there are other wines from my region with names relevant to the region. Vines were first planted in this region over 120 years ago.

good luck

Further clues:

The wine region of my first release receives around 25 inches of rain per year on average.

While most traditional varieties are grown here (Cabernet, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Riesling, Merlot), this region is renowned for one variety in particular, and the one I was produced from.

While not exactly a ‘trick’ question, today’s quiz isn’t quite ‘straightforward’ either

About to log off for the weekend - if you're out and about, I might see some of you at the Beer & Brewer Expo tonight ....

Campbells 'The Barkly' Durif? Not sure where the barrel reference would fit, though.

This is turning into a marathon, further clues clearly needed:
The soils in my region are immediately associated with my region more than any other in the country.
There is one variety synonymous with my region, I am produced from this variety.

From info received the 1988 Ocatvius Cabernet was the first of the line but also the last, in a way, as no Octavius was made in 1989, and then became Octavius Shiraz in 1990, which is really the true first of the line :?

It is indeed the 1988 Yalumba Octavius, the first of the line, produced from 88% Coonawarra Cabernet. It spent 3 years in American oak octaves (90 litre casks) crafted at Yalumba’s cooperage.
